There are many areas how you can effect that: careers, population, etc. Have you seen the documentation over at thumblr.

Each module has it's own page which are also linked at the overview.

You can click the in-game computer and tablet for settings but also Sims - random, households, NPC's - for a MC CC menu. You can even click the mailbox (as of version 3.4.0 an “mc_cheats” console command is added. This command will open the mailbox MC Cheats menu even if there is no mailbox around or if there was a Sims 4 update that would break menus everywhere).

If you have a more specific question about what you would like to do with story progression, that would me very helpful to me. Since there are just so many options available.
