When you say the mesh has been renamed, I'm assuming you mean the .package name has been changed. Your recolor should continue to work just fine as long as all that was changed was the original item's .package name. Changes to that name won't affect the internal numbering of the resources.
Thanks! Yes, all that's changed is the package name. For instance, if yours was named awesome lights.package. I just remove the special characters and any spaces in the package name.
