RAM for mods and CC

My entire Sims 4 folder goes up to 127 GB of storage because of my HUGE AMOUNT of CCs. I have a pretty weak computer which I'm about to upgrade because my currently is lagging the * out of my game. But, with that said, how much RAM do I need on my next computer to make my game go smooth? With ability to manage my 120 gb of mods and cc's (and I'm not done downloading lol) that I use very very frequently. I need a very honest answer. I myself am thinking about a 32gb. Is that too low or too overkill?

Shortly, how much RAM do cc's take in game?

  • @ClaraGreta  Having a giant pile of custom content doesn't actually use up a lot of RAM.  The game doesn't load all the cc itself, just pointers for everything except the items actually in use.  So you could get away with 8 GB RAM, although if you're thinking of futureproofing or multitasking, 16 would be better.  You really don't need to go higher than that.  Any time Sims 4 uses more than 10 GB RAM, it's a bug or a glitch or a broken mod; the game itself should never use that much memory no matter how large your Mods folder is.

@puzzlezaddict Thank you very much for your reply! This may be a stupid question, but why does my game lag more with a lot of ccs then? Is it the processor? Graphic card? The computer gets really overheated.

@ClaraGreta  The overheating alone could account for the lag.  Modern computer components are very good at throttling their performance when their temperatures get near the danger zone, which is a good thing, but you'll see the effects of the throttling in-game.

Having a lot of custom content won't overheat a computer though.  Having high-poly items can demand more of the graphics card or chip, and possibly overheat it if cooling isn't sufficient.  The processor could overheat if its overall workload is too high, which could be due to Sims 4 plus other running processes.  It's not usually going to be cc-related, although having broken items might increase the load more than working cc would.

The amount of cc you have might increase RAM use enough to cause lag.  While each item has a negligible impact, and even a large collection such as yours still has a relatively small impact, it's possible your current computer is so close to its limit already that your cc collection is pushing it over the edge.

But this is all speculation.  I'd need to see the results of some hardware monitoring to know for sure, and on even a mid-range new desktop, none of the above should be a problem.
