Hi @stevenwagenheim We've got some guides in the other pinned posts here. Check the How To Use Mods FAQ and the Tips post that's in the Issue thread.
For big updates like this, though, a lot of what to do is to wait for mod updates. When you do update a mod, delete the old version first. Keeping an organized folder helps make this easier. I have a no-mods save for times like this too.
@luthienrising Thanks. How long does something like this take to normally sort out? I'm guessing possibly a week or more.
In the meantime, as a retired computer programmer, I'm already setting up a system. I'm adding 2 folders to the Sims main folder. Broken Mods and Temp Mods. Broken is mods I know for a fact are broken such as Better Exceptions. Temp Mods is where I'm going to put all my mods in right now. I will then start adding them back to the Mods folder one a time. If the game still doesn't function, I'll move it to the broken folder. If it does function, I'll leave it where it is. I'll continue doing this until I've gone through all my mods. Of course, depending on the mod, I'll have to test for each thing the mod does. It may not be game breaking until I actually try to use it, such as the Mortem funeral mod. An issue is unlikely to pop up until I actually try to have a funeral.
Naturally, this is going to take a long time but as I'm retired, I have all the time in the world.

@stevenwagenheim It really depends on mod complexity and how much code changed. Plus there are all the personal factors (it's December, multiple modders broke body parts, etc.). Right now, I'm expecting that there'll be a couple of hotfixes for major mods today. Another batch of updates I'm about to post are smaller mods. Some modders will definitely need at least a week to sort through changes, and some of the new changes may require rethinking how some mods work.
Do keep a backup of your saves! That helps a lot when unexpected things go wrong.
- @luthienrising Thanks. Right now, I'm playing without mods and my current save is fine. As I add them back in to the mod folder, I'll exit out without saving. This will keep my clean save intact. Naturally, this means I'll be spending the next few days doing nothing but testing without any actual game play advancement. But that's cool. I didn't become a programmer (before that a QA tester) for the money. I did it because I just love that stuff.
Would it be helpful to the community if I posted my own report on broken mods somewhere? If so, where?Here is good 🙂 You can use the Issues thread for that. It helps me to know this:
- How you tested the mod (i.e., tested with nothing else or only mods it depends on, localthumbcache was deleted, if you also tested with no mods at all)
- What any error messages are
- What the symptoms are
Also, if you find mod testing satisfying after a while, I'm happy to refer you to modders who are looking for testers!
