Can’t change variant of build/buy items

I can no longer change the colour/variant of build and buy items either by clicking X when placing them, or by using the tool to change them once they are placed. The only way I can select a variant is when I’m selecting the item from the build/buy menu. This is a major problem because 1) The thumbnails on the build/buy menu are tiny and it’s impossible to get a good idea of what the item will look like before you actually pick it, and 2) I often change the variant/colour of an item multiple times whilst building.

This wasn’t happening yesterday and I’m *really* worried that something has corrupted my game, maybe related to the topic I posted earlier?? This issue is in a new save file though.

I play on Xbox Series X with all packs and kits. I have already tried restarting the game and console. Please help, I’m panicking that my game is permanently ruined!
