Okay that didn't take long at all ha ha! I thought no way am I going to get through playing with several packs before I need to start getting ready to travel after breakfast, but I decided to start playing a base game only world using the pack selector just while I had my morning coffee. I can't hope for much game time today, so at least it would be something.
Well...I started a new save (still on fresh game, no old saves) and used the pack selector to select base game only. I snapped a few screenshots. I was going to keep snapping shots of what was selected for the long test, so at least I got some.

And decided I would start with the pancakes.
We always knew they were trouble, and they didn't disappoint. Immediately upon unpausing (notice they are still moving but no live mode buttons on the bottom of the screen and some of the top buttons are gone too. I couldn't control them at all.):
So I tried the Manage Worlds button, it brought up Save and whatever, and I hit save and manage worlds. It didn't go to manage worlds and the screen went black like had happened originally.
Also, this is the only route in fullscreen that allows forcequit normally, but it only had the option to "Quit". Force Quit is normally there in its place if the game freezes. The options menu didn't have it either.
So, all of my packs, every single one loaded worked great, but when I used the pack selector on base game only, using the "deselect all" button and restarting the game with a "New Game" this happened as soon as I started live mode. As a reminder, I play fully Vanilla. I've never had any mods or CC in my game.
I hope this helps you! Thanks for all of your time and effort on this. You have no idea how much I appreciate your patience and care in this matter. -Tabitha
I couldn't repro the issues in your save, the Pancakes loaded and played fine for me :( Did you get any lastException or lastCrash files appear in your Sims 4 folder the last time this happened? Please copy/paste the contents here if so.
Could you create a new user account on your Mac and play that save in that account to see if the issue still remains for you? Make it a simple Administrator account during setup, don't bother with iCloud or anything. EA App and the game should be accessible if you have them installed in the default location in Macintosh HD/Applications.

Bluebellflora I'm sorry it took so long to respond. WiFi was kinda okay on the trip, surprisingly, but we were very busy. The play time I had I just enjoyed.
I can look and see if there's a last Exception/last Crash if you still need it, but I don't want to make a new user account. The game is actually working perfectly for me, as long as I'm staying clear of the pack selector.
Thank you so much for helping me through it all.
