Constant crashes especially in CAS

I installed Sims 4 today on my 2020 macbook air (M1 chip and 8gb RAM, ~100GB available space) running Big Sur. I haven't installed any mods and the game version is 1.112.519.1220.

The game crashes randomly, especially when fast forwarding or in create a sim. The audio continues to play when it’s on and it makes sounds like the gameplay is continuing to happen, however I can’t see the cursor and the screen freezes. I can’t pull up task manager to kill the program so I’ve ended up doing forced restarts with the power button.

I appreciate any advice if anyone knows what's going on! I can provide more information if needed.

I've tried the following fixes, and nothing has worked:

  • Removing localthumbcache.package;
  • Starting the game while disconnected from wifi;
  • Repairing program on EA app;
  • Turning down graphics quality to low;
  • Turning off audio;
  • Taking Sims 4 game folder out of EA folder;
  • Playing on battery power;
  • Turning on vertical sync

    macOS doesn't have Task Manager, that's a Windows thing. If you want to bring up running apps click on Apple > Force Quit in the menu bar, select The Sims 4 and then Force Quit. If you're playing in fullscreen use 3 finger swipe to the right to switch back to the main desktop.

    Never do this unless you have no choice. Your battery will drain really quickly, shortening the lifespan. Always play plugged into power. Not even sure why this would be a troubleshooting step?

    This does nothing unless you also remove the Mods folder. But as you tried a new clean Sims 4 folder there is no need to do this.

    You're running a very out of date version of macOS. Is there a reason you need to be running Big Sur? If not please update to the current macOS Sequoia 15.3.1 and see if that fixes your issues.
