One last update before bed. I did a lot of troubleshooting and trying to figure out things that might trigger these freezes. I played with several graphics settings, changing things one by one. I was finally able to play with "laptop mode" checked (obviously not ideal) but I got several hours of gameplay without a single freeze. I must have spoke too soon, however because it started freezing just a few moments ago (camera angle change). Damn... and I thought I may have figured out a workaround for the time being. I've attached the spin report here in case it's useful to the team.

The camera angle change seems to be a fairly reliable trigger...
Out of interest, are you using a mouse or a trackpad, and what make/model?
I always use a mouse. I'm on a 21" iMac (2019) with upgraded RAM and graphics card (posted in a previous post).

i contacted EA today, i didnt expect them to fix the problem but i wanted to make sure they know a lot of us mac users are not able to play the game.
im gonna tweet them too, just hope someone is working on fixing this for us
- 6 years ago
I’ve contacted them twice as well through support. This has been going on for 1.5 months now and I’m extremely irritated to put it lightly. Appreciate the posts here but I’m amazed no updates or fixes for this.
Hopefully my crash reports help... - 6 years ago
yes it is ridiculous and made sure to get that point across

EA Staff
Hello.
I just want to post here that the team is still aware of this issue. Unfortunately, I don't have any other info to share on this at the moment though.
well im glad you guys are aware and fingers crossed something can be fixed soon. thanks for updating us
side note: I gave my game another try today and it actually told me it did not recognize my graphics card. This has never happened before. Not sure if that changes anything but it was the first time I saw it. But then my game proceeded to break, this time my screen went completely red ☹️
- 6 years ago
I had the red screen several times as well.
Have you tried checking “laptop mode” under graphics options? I’ve been lucky today without significant freezing.
Still missing my ultra graphics though, lol.
ill give that a try, thank you!

Thanks for the update - is there any sort of ETA on how long these things take to be addressed?
I’ve spent a lot of money on this game, the expansion packs and computer and at this point I’m ready to request a refund from EA.It’s a total waste of money on a product I can’t even use.

I feel your frustration... there are a few expansions on sale and CC I've found that I've been itching to take out for a spin, but there's no point in spending money on something I can't use at the moment.

Agreed. And given the fact that there is not even a workaround 1.5 months later, I'm irritated. At the very least there should be a way for us to roll back to before the 9/2020 update, until they can figure out what's going on.
IF this ever works again I am never updating until I can see that Macs aren't adversely affected.

Hi all, just adding my most recent fun with this game while playing on laptop mode (hope the video attachment works).
I've been leaving my activity monitor open because I'm able to toggle back and forth now without a complete lock up but the game remains unresponsive. Interestingly the CPU usage is typically 80-90% but I see it jump up as high as 195% when the game starts to lock up. This is the first time my screen went crazy like this though. It's usually the scattered black boxes I see. Anyways, hopefully it is helpful... this occurred in the same save file I provided earlier. I'm by far not an expert but it seems like something in the game is triggering something to overpower/overwork the CPU or something. Not sure if that ends up being an innate Apple issue or not, although I've talked to them twice and they are of no assistance with this.
Sigh.

So happy we’re getting an expansion pack that many Mac players won’t be able to play
please help us EA
Agreed. I did some toying around with graphics setting again this weekend. I found it interesting that on low it was crashing within 15 minutes, but then on high I was able to play in build mode for 45 minutes, but when I changed to live play (city living lot) it did this. I was tracking CPU and graphics card action the entire time.
No idea what to make of any of this.

I don’t know anything about coding or making video games but all of this is all very bizarre to me.
Especially because I bought that dumb Star Wars pack because I am a loyal sim customer at the end of the day , played for a week with no problems and then this update came around which arguably made my darker skin tones look WORST than before and on top of that makes it unplayable.
someone said it before , but EA should of given us a turn around on the update or something to hold us over because the silence is only scaring me about the future for us Mac players. Our systems are definitely not “too old” yet for sims 4

No one has said your Macs are too old. Have you googled the AMD Vega GPUs? Seems they weren't very popular when they came out for both Mac and PC and had lots of issues generally. Maybe that's why Apple have moved away from them in the current 27" lineup. The 21" hasn't been refreshed yet this year but maybe they move away from them when they do for the higher spec. models. The iMac Pro hasn't been refreshed since it was launched in 2017. - 6 years ago
No one has said it yet and that’s just what I’m fearing. I understand computers age much quicker technology wise and this problem with the graphic card makes me fear these are the next to get the boot similar to what happened with metal a year or two ago.
I’m just really missing my sims 4 and I get very big FOMO with new packs coming. And I’ve paid a lot of money for these games, they should be working.
- Bluebellflora6 years agoHero+@WillFoShizzle
I doubt it. The Macs that don't support Metal are 2011 and earlier models. Legacy Edition was introduced for non-Metal Macs in November 2019, you're a long way off having an 8 year old machine yet.
Yep, I get the annoyance at having paid for the game and it's not working. It happened so often in the TS3 days and these AMD GPUs really seem to be problematic at the moment. Not really sure what else EA can say? They've confirmed they are looking into it. - 6 years ago
alright well thank you, you def eased my mind a little with the age of my machine.
i guess seeing snowy escape on Twitter sent me off my rocker haha
ill keep checking back
I think the issue for me is when "looking into something" for nearly 2 months results in no updates, communication or solution.
This is obviously a very significant issue, as it renders the game virtually unplayable for us. It's not a simple bug or glitch. I've come to accept those, lol.
But for those of us who have spent $$$ on the product (I own every pack!), I'm surprised that we haven't been given even a temporary solution (e.g., reverting back to prior to the 9/2020 update, when this issue wasn't occurring).
I get that we are probably in the minority when it comes to gaming since most people use PCs, but still...
stay strong my mac sim 4 friends with the snowy escape trailer today
I know it's killing me that I can't even be excited :-(
but maybe with a new pack coming well get a patch to fix the last patch? fingers crossed!
Agreed - pack looks good and I like some of the updates. EA isn't getting a dime from me though until they fix this major issue.

Very defeatist sentiments here... 🙂 My MacBook Pro was bought exactly a year ago, and the AMD Vega 20 was the highest spec GPU possible for my custom build. It would not even cross my mind to think that my computer was too old to run a game that is in and of itself 6 times older than my computer...
And Macs may be a minority, but that's neither here nor there to be honest - EA sells this game for Macs, so it should work on Macs. What I have currently is unplayable, so I'd at least expect the ability to roll back to 1.65.77.1220 where this issue wasn't happening, so I can at least continue playing the game I've paid for...

I totally agree, there’s no way I can accept that my computer shouldn’t handle this. It wasn’t cheap to upgrade the graphics card or RAM, haha.
But the fact that my game has been unplayable for almost 2 months, no updates and no ability to roll back speaks for itself.I imagine if a large amount of PC users had unplayable games there would be a fast fix/workaround.
Here we are twiddling our thumbs and waiting.

You know something else I have noticed? All of you have CPUs with more than 4 cores. And so do the 27" iMacs having similar issues, although they don't have Vega GPUs and the problems aren't as severe.
My 2019 27" iMac also gets a complete system lock up sometimes in-game and I have to power it off and back on again. It has a Radeon Pro 580X 8Gb and an 8-core i9 CPU.......
