Game freezes or crashes after less than a minute of playing

Hello,

My game keeps freezing or crashing, please help!

My laptop: MacBook Pro, 13 inch, M1, 2020

Running: Big Sur 11.4

I've already deleted all the origin files and reinstalled it.

I've also ticked the vertical sync graphics option

After ticking the vertical sync box the crashing seems to have stopped on an old save. It also suggests that save to "Resume" when i boot up the game, even after crashing my most recent save (the one I've been actively playing lately). So it's already weird that it suggests that I "resume" a save I wasn't playing most recently. But yeah that's probably a symptom of the crashing.

For context, yesterday I've bought the halloween pack, so adding werewolves, vampires and spooky stuff to my game. I played it a few hours without problem after that.

Today, the game updated. I played it for about an hour or two after the update without issue. Then it started crashing. Now I can't play my most recent save at all. It's very frustrating!

I will try to see if that old save really doesn't have the crashing issue, or if it will also happen there after a little more time.

If anyone has any advice on this, please help me!

Kind regards

  • @Bluebellflora Hi, I'm having a similar problem. I'm not getting an error message but out of nowhere, my game kept crashing after being open for a minute or less. I reinstalled origin as i saw that as a suggested solution on here. Then i ticked the vertical syncing or something bc i have an M1 chip. I restarted the game and then it seemed to work again. But, when I restarted the game for some reason it suggested I keep playing an older save, eager to see if it worked i just clicked the "Resume" button, loading up my older save. It works fine, but when I switched over to the save I was originally playing, it crashed in the exact same way.

Long story short, I'm trying everything I can on how to fix a crashing game and so I came across your reply and I was wondering how i could try this. How do i make a new sims 4/saves folder without it messing up my old folder? Without losing any saves? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I've never messed around with the folders and im scared to cause even more problems with my game.

Move the Sims 4 folder from your Documents folder to the desktop or rename it then load the game and a new one will be created. Quit the game when you get to the main menu, no need to save as the folder will have been recreated. Now copy the problematic save into the newly created Sims 4 > saves folder and load up the game.

Thank you for the quick reply! I followed your instructions and at first glance it seemed to work, the game started and the lessons lady started talking to me and everything, so it was obviously a "refreshed" game. But then it crashed in exactly the same way again...

I played some more with my old save before i tried this, and it works fine... It could be that it's in the "before" stage of the bug showing up. My current save also worked fine for hours before it suddenly became unplayable. But I'm very confused.

I'm going to stop trying to fix this for today, but any help or advice is very very welcome!!!

It's in live mode, not always at the same time but pretty consistently within the first minute. I've tried the load different households and it crashes pretty immediately every time. At some point I loaded the same household a few times in a row, gave my sim the same action every time (invite someone in at the door) and it crashed every time my sim walked through one of the interior doors. This made me think it might be a graphics issue and something moving (the door opening) is causing it to crash. In another household it crashed while i was hovering my cursor over something in the bottom menu and while loading the extra information pop up-thing, it crashed.

It hasn't crashed during BB or CAS mode or in the manage world menu or any menu for that matter, but I haven't spent a lot of time investigating this either. Or spent a lot of time in these modes at all since it started crashing.

(I'm using "crash" only but sometimes it still manifest as freezing)

Another weird thing that I noticed is that after a crash, the Origin window shoots off screen and I have to quit and restart the program to get the window back. I'm not sure if it's connected, but it doesn't happen after a freeze + force quit of the game. Only after a crash.

If you need more information, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm very eager to fix this. Thank you.

Thanks! Could you share the save with me so I can test it? Upload it to a file sharing site such as Google Drive/Mediafire etc and PM me the link.

Are you using Mods? If so please list which ones in the PM.

Thought of something you could try... Load the household then go to the map screen and move/evict them. Try them on a different lot and see if it still crashes.
