HELP!!!! SIMS 4 KEEPS FREEZING ON MY MACBOOK

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:Mac
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
What is your current game version number? N/A
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? Discover University
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Load the game
What happens when the bug occurs? Anytime I try to create a Sim, Edit my Sim, build a house, edit a house, after 5 minutes I get the colorful spinning bubble, and then everything freezes and I have to manually shut down my computer. When I go back in the game I have over 5 saves of the same Sim family, and the game continues to repeat the exact same part that I initially left off from the previous week. When I initially downloaded the game I downloaded a few mods/cc, but after the first crash I completely deleted all mods and have uninstalled and reinstalled game, repaired game, patches, updated to Sims 4 Legacy addition and deleted any saved games. As well as I have deleted unnecessary files from Sims 4 folder, tried placing certain files open on my desktop, and other tips and tricks that I found online but it continues to freeze and has done so for almost an entire week now, I just downloaded the game last Thursday night.
What do you expect to see? Computer freezes/crash
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Not now. I've removed them.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? No

N/A

The latest and current version of macOS is Catalina, not High Sierra. Can you upgrade to that?

You don't need the Legacy Edition, even though you've installed it your Mac will not be running it. Have you moved your whole Sims 4 folder to the desktop and then launched the game so it is like new? If that doesn't work it sounds like your game is a mess so the best thing would be to completely uninstall and reinstall just the normal game, forget Legacy. Make sure you disable automatic updates so Legacy doesn't download.

Let us know how you get on after doing that 🙂

You don't need the Legacy edition.

Bluebellflora has lots of suggestions for playing on a Mac on her site: https://bluebellflora.com/tips-for-playing-the-sims-4-on-a-mac/

Crinrict's blog has instructions for resetting your game without reinstalling. Helpful for troubleshooting. https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2014/09/resetting-the-game-to-factory-settings-without-reinstalling/

Try starting a new save with a clean new "The Sims 4" folder and check the default graphic setting. You may have to adjust some down. You could also try playing in windowed mode rather than fullscreen.

You might also want to look through the Mac section here at AHQ. https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-Mac/bd-p/The-Sims-Mac

  • Thanks for the tips!

I've tried playing in a minimized screen rather than fullscreen and it still froze on me.

I tried playing without the legacy version, and I couldn't get past the initial loading screen, so I downloaded legacy and at least I can create a Sim and move them into a house before it freezes/crashes.

I've also deleted all previous saved games, and it continues to freeze. It'll play for 20 mins max and then all of a sudden the colorful spinning bubble will pop up, and then it'll disappear and my whole computer will be frozen. I have no choice but to hold down my power button to turn my computer off.

It's all very strange, but I've played Sims 3 on this same computer and had absolutely no issues with freezing or crashing. I feel like maybe I got a bugged version, and unfortunately I can't get a refund.

  • MacBook Air has one fan, and my laptop never gets super hot, I always have it placed on a table top or lap table. So there’s no issues there, and I’ve already updated to the latest OS version about 2 weeks ago, which would’ve been before I downloaded Sims 4.

I thank you all for the ideas but nothing works, I tried changing the graphics inside of the game this morning and 15 mins into the game it froze and crashed again.

    I am beyond frustrated.
