I fixed it. I used Microsoft edge browser and went to the origin page and downloaded an updated client. https://www.dm.origin.com/mac/download is the link to the download.

@chelllygirl omg thank you so much. I have been having this problem for so long now and EA just told me to "wait". now I can finally play the sims again thanks to you.
