Re: CAS, Build mode, live mode camera being weird

Hello.

Is anyone still seeing this issue (with an empty Mods folder and macOS up-to-date)?

  • I am. I just repaired game files, reset the game (fresh files), rebooted MacBook Pro 15 2017, tried with a new mouse, tried with no mouse (touchpad only) and still having issues. Only thing that makes a difference is changing from Retina display to unchecking Retina display - with checked the camera will turn only to the right and will drag Sim features in CAS but only up (so can only make eyebrows go up, nose, chest size, etc. Can't go down), without it checked it won't turn at all or "drag" features in CAS mode when editing a Sim.

  • I am a previous poster in this thread, and as of today, this issue still occurs. Even with my mods folder empty and an up-to-date macOS, the camera glitching unfortunately continues.

    Hello @celosiiaJ @ahzidahakah

Could you send me a direct message with this file?

    \Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Config.log

Also, if you could share a video of the issue occurring, that may be helpful for the team as well.

  • Yes, I'm willing to do that, however I'm not exactly sure how to send the file via direct message. Is there any guide/tutorial that I can read?

Also, just for clarification, would you like me to the video to sent via direct message as well, or would you like for it to be uploaded in a post like this?

    Hey @celosiiaJ

To send a DM to @SimQARobo you can simply click this link or hover over the avatar of the person you wish to DM and then click Send Message.

For best practices on sending files there is a pinned thread in the Bug Reports section here that has more information.

Please let me know how you get on 🙂

  • Thank you @EA_Cade for those helpful links! I sent a direct message containing the file to @SimQARobo a couple of minutes ago.

I also decided to just include the video of the issue in this post so people in the community can see what I'm referring to in my previous posts. Sorry for the slightly poor quality, I had to make the file smaller so it could be uploaded.

If there are any problems regarding viewing the video, please let me know!

Edit: Lol I just realized how small the video is in the post. If you want a closer look I can send it in a direct message.

  • I'm having the same issue on my iMac (24-inch, M1, 2021). Trying to rotate a sim in CAS and it just spins out of control. Using sliders is almost impossible. I also tried the tab camera during gameplay and it's impossible to control.

I've had this exact issue for quite some time. I bought a mid-2017 Intel MacBook Pro 13-inch (Two Thunderbolt model) in 2019, and first noticed the issue then. I recently upgraded to an M1 iMac (8-core GPU model) and the issue persists. I've changed mice, removed my entire EA folder, freshly installed the game on my new iMac, and nothing. On Reddit, some people recommend disabling the "Retina Display" option in the graphics settings of the game; however, this is only a partial (and mostly useless) fix. Instead of the camera pulling to the right when it's rotated left, left rotations are just choppy and take a lot of effort. They never pull, though. However, playing the game without that option looks terrible, so I usually don't bother and just suffer with the pulling, since the stuttering effects gameplay almost as much as the pulling. This is, unfortunately, only one of quite a few seemingly Mac-only bugs I've regularly experienced on both of my Macs throughout the years, but it's the only one that regularly and consistently makes playing the game harder.

@Bluebellflora I bought it back in January 2019, so whatever version of macOS Mojave (10.14.x) was shipping with the machines at the time. However, I've consistently kept it up to date. So, I've run the game on Catalina (10.15+), Big Sur (11.0+), and Monterey (12.0+) and the issue has existed through all of them. Even with the most recent macOS Monterey 12.4 update that was released about two weeks ago.

Thanks and very extraordinary that you’ve experienced this on all OSs. What’s even more extraordinary is that not all Mac users experience this. I wonder if it’s related to something else running on the Mac? Either another app or something running in the background such as antivirus or other monitoring software. Do you have anything else running?

Hey there. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I was doing some troubleshooting to eliminate some possible causes. Here's what I found out.

Uninstalling, Reinstalling, Removing the EA folder, and doing a fresh boot of the game had no effect on the M1 iMac. The issue remained.

I tried booting the M1 iMac in Safe Mode to eliminate any possible interfering login items or processes. The issue remained.

I also tried booting the Intel MacBook in Safe Mode, however, the game refused to boot at all on that machine, in Safe Mode. It claimed it needed the Legacy Edition of the game to do so. Once I rebooted into Normal Mode, the game booted like normal and the issue remained.

I dug through my old stuff and tried installing Origin and the base game on an Early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" running macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. However, this device doesn't support Metal, so the game wouldn't boot. So, I won't be able to tell if the issue exists on this hardware or not.
  • @MacMcJ

Thanks but what about other processes and apps running in the background? What’s showing as running in the background in the top right menu bar in Finder?

And yeah, don’t boot into Safe Mode. It doesn’t properly load the Metal drivers. Safe Mode is ok to test Origin sometimes but that’s about it.

On the Intel Mac, the only apps I leave running when the game is on would be Displaperture (app that rounds the corners on Macs with black bezels), Backtrack (records audio like a dashcam), Mac Fan Control, Turbo Boost Switcher, and Amphetamine. However, even after quitting them all and killing any residual processes in Activity Monitor, the issue is still there. The only abnormal processes that might be running in the background after that is those relating to my Time Machine backups or Photos Syncing.
  • @MacMcJ

Thanks. Can you set up a new user account on your Mac and test the game in that account? Don’t copy anything over, just a new clean user account and a new Sims 4 folder recreated when you launch the game. If Origin is installed in the default location on your Mac (System Applications folder) you won’t have to install the game again.

    @Bluebellflora

Setting up a new user didn't fix it.

And yeah, I did. Could it potentially be a macOS System interference that managed to be transferred with the rest of my system when I restored via Time Machine? I could try reinstalling macOS using Recovery Mode if that might help. It'll just take a few hours, since my internet isn't the best.
  • @MacMcJ

Yes, that’s what I’m thinking may be the issue as you’ve had it continuously on one machine then another.

I never use Time Machine, always preferring to manually copy over files and always installing software as new.

The best test would be to wipe your machine and reinstall the OS but that may be a little drastic. I would do that though 🙂

Marked as Solution for Visibility. This is still an open issue.

    Hello.

Just letting you know the team no longer needs additional information about this issue for the time being.  They will investigate.

    Thank you.

Since I have a Time Machine drive, I decided to wipe my iMac to test things out. After wiping my iMac's SSD using Recovery Mode's Disk Utility and then reinstalling macOS, I set the computer up as new, and transferred no data. The only setting I changed was enabling right-click on the Magic Mouse. I freshly installed Origin using Safari, and then installed the base game, fresh as well. This didn't fix this issue. It appeared immediately in CAS on the entirely new installation. It's starting to look like the bug is following around my Origin Account, rather than my computers.

And for what it's worth, I'm running the Limited Edition version of the base game. I don't know if the versions of the base game might have different coding, but I just figured I'd just mention it, since it appears to be the only version of the base game (in the U.S. anyway) that didn't get the rebranded, royal blue cover art. At least, in my library, it didn't. The only time I've ever seen it change, is when I set my VPN to Germany, and I get the regional cover art.

  • @MacMcJ

Thanks for testing and reporting back 🙂 The base game editions are all the same, apart from the Legacy edition which doesn't get any updates.
