I will have to disagree here. EA deliberately turned off gameplay for Legacy. Instead of just cutting off older Macs from updateds they rendered the the app unusable. This is a decision made by EA, not a hardware issue. By forcing the update, the app becomes incompatible and the computers do not meet the minimal requirements anymore. They could've just not forced the update and let users play with an outdated app that will not receive updates or will be compatible with new DLC. I've seen many developers do this over the last decade or so, especially on mobile but more and more on computers as well. 

I also think your comparison is lacking. The game and packs were made unusable by a mandatory update. You can still play the versions you mentioned on machines that met the requirements when the game was initially sold.
