Sims 4 crashing lately... since gallery update?

I don't know if it's just me or what...
Anyone else's game crashing more lately (maybe the last 7-10 days or so)?
I'm on an iMac, and the system is not prone to crashes or being overwhelmed, even on Sims. (I do photo editing and web design and have a pretty beefed-up system to handle it.) So... I have been surprised that my Sims 4 game crashes regularly lately, several times a day sometimes.

I have noticed the following and wonder if any could be factors:

  • The timing of it seems to possibly be around when the new gallery update (Sept. 1018) was done/released?
  • Many of the times (not all) that I have the crash happen are when I'm accessing my gallery area.
  • It's the Sims 4 game that crashes... not Origin, and not my computer... BUT...
  • Occasionally it freezes and actually renders the computer unresponsive as it freezes it up (to where I cannot use the 'force quit' in task manager as it has frozen access.

Also, another observation:

  • During the several days that the gallery update was being anticipated for release (while it was down/up off and on for a few days and then just down about a day and a half). I was noticing that the game saves seemed to take F O R E V E R but that went away... Until the last couple of days. I occasionally (not always) find that the save can take up to 15 minutes or so. Just here and there, and only for short periods... as if it is waiting for something, not because the computer is frozen up.

So... before looking into whether or not it is just me and I need to try a 'game repair' or something (I don't use CC and mods), I thought I would see if others are having this issue. (Is it horses or zebras?)

  • @SheriGR  Bluebellflora doesn't respond to PMs, and anyway she probably won't be around for a bit due to the time difference.  If you want to attach the crash log to a post here, you can do so using the "browse" button.  (Please don't post it into responses as text—it's far too long and will make the thread difficult to follow.)

In the meantime, it's possible you have a corrupt file somewhere in your game folder.  I understand you don't use mods or cc, but certain cache files can fill up with old data and cause issues.  If you're not sure which files to delete, you can drag your entire TS4 folder out of Documents and onto your desktop.  When you launch the game again, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  You can then quit and copy your saves into the new folder from the old one.  If you get another crash, we can move on to some other troubleshooting steps.

I have disabled Origin in-game plus I ran the game's the repair process.

I just went onto my game and played after having run the 'repair' process and I had 'disabled Origin in-game'.  I have been on playing between 1.5-2hrs, and had checked my gallery when I first booted the game up. No crash. I just now was playing along and decided to check my gallery since there was a notification. As soon as I clicked the gallery/open gallery, the game crashed. Not Origin, not my computer... just Sims 4.

I have the crash report if you want me to PM it to you.

I did this but it has cleared out everything I had uploaded into my gallery, including shared items. Can I re-add a particular folder to get these back?

Update... I added back in the 'tray' folder from the old TS$ folder and that seems to have fixed the fact that all of the content I had uploaded (builds and households) were missing from the gallery after the new game load.

Moving out the folder is the basic troubleshooting step to see if the problem is user data or the game installation/Mac. It creates a new, clean game with no saves, CC/Mods, Tray items etc.

The builds and households you’re referring to are saved to your Library, not the Gallery. If they were uploaded to the Gallery you would still be able to see them with a new game, along with everyone else.

Is your game now working ok? It didn’t crash when you opened the Gallery?

Has not crashed yet, but I was not testing long. Once I re-added the 'saves' folder and went into the game, my families/worlds were there, but when I went to the gallery, where you upload &/or share builds and sims/households, there was only 'default' stuff in there. None of the households, rooms or lots that I had saved to my library &/or shared with the community/gallery. Also, when I went and searched in the general gallery for my username, nothing came up. Not sure why if my re-adding the 'tray' folder was not the difference, but once I did re-add it I now see the items in my library and the gallery again. I also did see that someone had downloaded one of them while I was on the game for a short time after that, so they appear to be working/connecting. Update to this: I looked further at the library/gallery and apparently the tray brought back in my library items, but only a handful retained their connection to the gallery, though a bit over 30 had been 'shared'. Perhaps the connection was broken when resetting things, or by the fact that I re-ran the repair hoping it would re-connect. Anyway, I have re-uploaded/shared to community the items - though, once again (like when the gallery was re-done a couple of weeks ago), I lost all of the download counts.

I did notice a couple of things. The family I have been playing for a few days in Newcrest (they needed re-assigning of beds, re-hire the maid and a few things, but seemed okay other than that) had been unable to hire a gardener before (greyed out in Newcrest), and when they were calling to hire the maid now gardener was not greyed out anymore -and the gardener showed up. Also, re-downloading the main file and re-adding the old 'saves' and 'tray' file reduced the Sims folder significantly. The day before the folder was 472.1MB and currently it is 92.9MB. So, hopefully it cleared out the right stuff. I will test it more and let you know.

Update - after more time playing in that game (maybe a week or so 'Sim time') I have had several days that rained and one 'mystery weather' day and no lighting on any of them. Maybe it was a 'mystery' weather day and that was the issue and it was a rare occurrence, too soon to tell. I can live with it being very occasional (or even regularly, if I know/plan on it.

Another thing I noticed when the lightning storm day was occurring... neither the gardener or the maid came that day. Is that normal on days with lightning?

That’s exactly what I would have expected. As I explained in my previous post, moving out the old folder forces the game to create a new, clean one. As well as creating the new folders I referenced it also resets graphics options and clears out cache files and screenshots (they will all safely be in the folder you moved out). The Sims 4 stickied thread on the first page of this Mac forum is full of information which you may find helpful and informative - https://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-Mac/READ-FIRST-Sims-4-Mac-Help-Guides-and-Troubleshooting/m-p/4612394#M161

The more packs you have the more resources the game will use. If you find it lags just lower the graphics options which should help.
