If it were definitely game related it would affect every single Mac user. Have you uninstalled and reinstalled the game to see whether your game installation is corrupted? If you have, and it still isn't working, I'm thinking there may be a problem in your OS or possibly hardware related.
Which exact model Mac do you have?
Sorry it's taken me all day to reinstall everything but I am still having the same issue.

When you reinstalled did you allow the game access to all locations when the OS prompted? Such as the Documents folder, external drives if relevant etc.
