Unable to start: The Sims 4 is already running - Mac only

I have checked my settings and Origin has access to my external drive. I'm not sure what else to do.

Did you read the link? In the OP it has common error messages and why they come up. This error message probably isn’t anything to do with Origin and everything to do with the Documents folder.
