Unable to start: The Sims 4 is already running - Mac only

My sims has been working fine but this week all of a sudden, when I try to open the game It pops up saying its already running, ive tried:

removing all my mods
uninstalling and reinstalling
using the activity centre to close all background ea
moved my sims game to an external hard drive in case it was space that it needed

nothing works please help
