Accidentally clicked another button and now SIMS won't open game still running
Does anyone know how to fix this without force restarting as I really don't want to lose all my progress.

2e4cc1bc66fbf410 Did you try any of the options Google suggested to you? I'm not sure how the game would respond to you manually editing Options.ini, but if it didn't crash, you'd have forced windowed mode and thereby probably gotten around the issue.
You could also close all other running apps, aside from the EA App, and then alt-F4 to close the game, which should prompt you to save.
