Bugs with Sims work and school progress

Since yesterday, there's a super annoying bug with work and school progress in my Sims 4 game. It's hard to explain but hopefully someone's had the same problem and knows what to do. 

When my sims returned from work and school, it still had the at work/school/away from lot symbols (briefcase?) on their picture (sorry for not knowing the correct terms!) and they didn't get paid, progress didn't increase, and no notifications came up that they'd completed a day of work/school. I hope that makes sense. I was also unable to select an activity for them to do at school/work e.g. "work hard". I clicked it and nothing happened and it didn't go faded to indicate they were doing it. I tried quitting jobs and getting them again but that didn't help. I then thought it might be a glitch with that new household so I went into another and the same thing was happening. I've also done a "repair game" in Origin with no luck. 

I've never had this issue before and it really makes the game unplayable. I've only recently got back into Sims and have been really enjoying it so I hope someone can help with this super annoying issue.

Re mods, I only have a few that I've had for over a year (I keep them updated) which have never caused any problems. As recommended, I always remove when updating the game.
