Can this run the Sims 4

I'm trying to buy a laptop for my gf birthday, all she wants to do is to be able to play the sims 4 on it with mods, I don't have a big budget and don't really know anything about computers. If anybody could recommend a laptop for about £200 I would be greatly appreciated.

  • @FatfQker  This laptop might run Sims 4 okay on low graphics settings, but probably only if your girlfriend doesn't own many expansion packs.  8 GB RAM is the effective minimum requirement these days when all but the first few expansions are involved.  (Game and stuff packs are generally fine.)  Additionally, the SSD is quite small—it would have room for Windows and Sims 4 but not much more than that.  Even a small custom content collection could be a problem.

I looked at a couple of U.K. sites that sell used laptops, and the single best option, in terms of hardware, that I saw for under £230 is this one:

    https://www.laptopoutlet.co.uk/geo-infinity-geobook-340-14-1-fhd-laptop-intel-core-i3-10110u-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-fingerprint-reader-1-year-msoffice-365-subscription-windows-10-pro-3-year-warranty-rfb-ge202.html

It has 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage, both sufficient for Sims 4 even with all packs installed.  Its graphics chip isn't great, but it's faster than the one in the laptop you're considering, and the processor is significantly better too.

You might have better luck on Ebay.  Let me know if you're interested in going that route.

@FatfQker  I checked sold items and prices, and it looks like the best laptop configuration typically sold for £200 or less is an Intel i5-1135G7 processor, 8 GB RAM, and 256 GB storage.  The processor and its integrated graphics chip can run all current Sims 4 packs together on medium-high or high graphics settings, and the RAM and storage are sufficient for the game.

The only other detail that matters, other than the laptop being in good working condition of course, is that it comes with Windows 10 or 11 already installed.  If Windows is in S mode, you can "upgrade" it to Home for free, which is necessary before installing Sims 4.

If you see an option with 16 GB RAM, that would be better, but don't worry too much about it.  Similarly, 512 GB storage would be nice to have but isn't necessary if this laptop is just for Sims 4.  Between the two, I'd pick more memory over more storage.

Any given processor will always come with the same graphics chip, so you can choose just based on the CPU.  Other similar options to the Intel processor are an AMD Ryzen 5 5500U or Ryzen 7 5700U.  They're in the same perfornance category as an i5-1135G7.  Putting aside the possibility of a defective laptop, any system with one of these three processors should be within a few percentage points of any of the others in performance, so they're all roughly equally good choices as long as they also have at least 8 GB memory, 256 GB storage, and Windows.  The i7-1165G7 is a bit faster but isn't a necessary upgrade.

Here's one example that's Buy Now for £190:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/166181273434

If you don't like it for one reason or another, for example the screen is too small or the keyboard isn't quite right, this should give you a list of all options with an i5-1135G7 CPU, sorted by price:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=i5-1135g7&_sacat=177&_sop=15

I'm sure you know how bidding goes on Ebay, so it might take a little time to get the system you want if you don't find one with a Buy Now button, but going by the recently-completed sales, you should be able to get something for around £200 sooner or later.

@kitanavienne  Please post a link to the exact computer you're looking at.  This particular model apparently comes in a few different configurations, some of which I would avoid if the goal is to run more than the Sims 4 base game and maybe a few packs.  But there's a significant difference between the lowest- and highest-end versions of this laptop.

@kitanavienne  This laptop isn't great for Sims 4 at all.  The graphics chip could run the game on low-medium settings with all expansions enabled, and higher with significantly less content.  But the 4 GB RAM is going to be a significant limitation.  Some expansions need more than that to work at all, with Cats & Dogs probably being the most demanding.  Even without C&D, the cumulative demands of a few other expansions will be a problem.

If you're looking for something better, I'd strongly recommend finding a laptop with at least 8 GB RAM, or one that can be upgraded if you know anyone who could help you with that.  The next detail to look for is a better processor, but it's hard to neatly summarize the decent options here.  Still, something like an i5-1135G7 or a Ryzen 5 5500U would be a significant improvement.

Feel free to link any other laptops you're considering.  Or if you prefer, link a few sites where you'd be comfortable buying, and list your budget as well, so I can have a look around myself.
