Solved

Cannot create subfolders in Mods.

I don't think this is a very common problem to have and I'm at my wit's end here.

It worked for a while, but then stopped again.  If I right click, I have no option to create a new folder.  Folders don't show up in my Mods folder period.  If I copy the folder and put it somewhere else, the previous subfolders show up again.  I have tried making the Mods folder again, removing everything from the Sims 4 folder under Electronic Arts - everything.

I'm reinstalling the game now, and I backed up all of my stuff, so I deleted the Sims 4 folder.  To check, I created The Sims 4 folder again (the game isn't even installed so pointless but I wanted to check) and created Mods.  And still, I can't create any subfolders.

I have (the edited) Resource.cfg in the proper spot.  I don't have the problem of not being able to create subfolders anywhere else on my computer.  I've looked up solutions online about being unable to create new folders but since this is such a specific and isolated incident, I think it has to be a Sims-related problem to some degree.

  • It may be an useless idea (it's a long shot), but there's no harm in trying. You say that Windows doesn't let you right click to make a subfolder. What if you try to make it through the Windows command prompt? It may give you an error or message on why you have this problem.

1.- Check the path of your mods folder. It usually is: C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods.

Yours could be different. For example mine is E:\MyUsername\Mis documentos\Electronic Arts\Los Sims 4\Mods:

2.- Right click on the bottom left corner of your screen and choose "Command prompt (administrator)". Follow the following steps with care.

3.- You will start at C:\Windows\system32. You need to go to the path of your Mods folder.
If your mods folder is located in C: drive, write "cd\" (see image below).

If your mods folder is in another drive, write the letter and :, for example: "E:" (see image below).

4.- Now write the path to your mods folder, something like this:  "cd Users\YourUsername\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods". It will let you know if there's any problem, like it tells me in the first screenshot because I don't have those folders.

5.- Use "dir" to ask Windows to list the folders and files that are located in your mods folder.

6.- Use "md newfolder" to make a new subfolder in mods with the name newfolder. It probably will give you some error message.

Use dir again to check if the folder is there. If it is, it should be visible if you open your mods folder like you normally do.

Let us know your results, good luck!

Truthfully, I'm going to be getting a new laptop in a few weeks, but it'd still be nice to know what somehow went wrong.  It'd also be nice to be able to organize my massive Mods folder.

Thank you, though.  If anyone else has any ideas that'd be great.

  • I dont exactly have another idea but with me it lets me divide my mods into sub folders once but i cant then subdivide further I don't know if this is occurinng for the same reason but it seemed relevant.

My OS is also Windows 8.1

Obviously not going to be much help as I can't do it myself, but did you edit your Resource.cfg?  Just google Sims 4 resource.cfg and you'll get instructions.  You have to edit it to be able to make more subfolders, about five levels deep is how the tutorials usually go?

Thank you for the idea!  However, I got so fed up last night that I performed a refresh on my computer (which in hindsight wasn't the brightest idea because now I'm having to reinstall everything), and folders are working/showing up now?  So whatever hellish problem was preventing me from being able to make subfolders is now resolved.

Thanks to both you and crinrict for being so helpful though!  I don't think either of you would have probably ended up finding a definite solution.  I think there wasn't much else I could do except refresh it, as drastic as that seemed.

It was a very strange issue indeed.

Glad the 'wood-hammer method' (as we would call it in German) has worked for you
