Can't play households in sims 4

This feels so stupid but I've spent hours trying to fix it or find a tutorial and can't figure it out. I got the game yesterday. I made a family/houehold, went to the map screen, selected an empty...

    Update: I ended up saving/publishing the house to the gallery, uninstalling/reinstalling the game, and starting over. Then I just remade the sims and downloaded the house design to use. I still have no idea what was wrong the first time but it was definitely some sort of bug, not just on me, because there are several more buttons available I just never saw the first time. Like the "add/create sim" next to the play button on the start menu screen, that wasn't there any time I opened the game before. And now when I go to the world map there is no sim already in the lower right corner, it lets me just select a house and I can play as anyone. Before, it only had the first custom household I made and the only available button to click was the moving truck. Bizarre!!! Hopefully it all goes smoothly now.

Sounds strange.

Did you add any custom content or mods to your game ?

    I hadn't installed anything but the base game--not even some of the downloadable stuff that came with (I had just gotten it on sale the previous night, so didn't have time to fiddle or install anything). I managed to fix it though, it's in its own reply to this thread.
