Can't Update Sims 4/Not Enough Disk Space

I noticed today that a bunch of my CC was gone in game, even though I did not move or delete these items. I checked for a game update thinking maybe that was the problem, sure enough there is a new update. The game will not update, it says there is not enough disk space. The space on my C drive is very limited, I want to move the game entirely to the D drive but am unable to figure out how to do that since the info I keep finding is outdated, referring to the origin app that is no longer in use. The instructions for origin do not translate to the EA app, so idk how to move the game to make it work. Someone suggested repairing the game in the EA app, I tried and it even says there's not enough room to do that. I have restarted the EA app and my computer, I tried moving some Sims 4 cc over the desktop or D drive to make room and it won't let me do that either, saying that I need a total of 222GB total, yet there is over a terabyte available on that drive. I am not tech savvy for these kinds of things, so I am very hesitant to blindly move or delete files. I don't understand what most of the files on the C drive even are or what their purpose is, so it's hard to delete them just because someone online said to, at least without explaining why they don't matter you know? I just don't know what to do, and am unsure of how to fix this, please help.

  • @BloodHoneySin  The most reliable approach here is to uninstall Sims 4 through the EA App and reinstall it on D.  (Create a folder where it will go, for example D:\Games; don't just install straight on D.)  This will not remove your saves or other user data, although I'd suggest copying the saves and Tray folders and pasting them onto D just to be safe.  This also won't cause you to lose any purchased content.

@puzzlezaddict It took all night but I did it, the files look different than before and the game when launched was entirely new, none of my saves were there even though the files are on my computer where they are supposed to be. Now the game won't even launch, EA app keeps telling to download it even I did already. So I am at a loss.

@BloodHoneySin  Please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of Sims 4 and the EA App, as described here:

    https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-PC/CURRENT-ISSUE-Sims-4-DLC-shows-as-installed-won-t-load-in-game/m-p/12942151#uninstall

Please be sure to rename the Sims 4 folder that contains your saves, mods, and other user data so it doesn't get deleted.  Reinstall to a folder on D and test the game at leat twice, restarting your computer in between attempts.

If you run into another problem, create a new admin Windows account on your computer and try playing there.  Make it local, as in, don't link it to your Microsoft account.  You should be able to run Sims 4 without reinstalling anything, but your saves and other user data won't be available.  That can be addressed later.

As long as your saves are intact, you should be able to restore them.  But the first task here is to get Sims 4 itself running properly and consistently.

@puzzlezaddict So I hadn't done anything yet until just now since this is honestly stressing me out, Ijust now tried to repair the game and noticed that the EA is creating a new EA file on the c drive instead of on the d drive where the game is. It's not recognizing the EA file already on the D drive.

@BloodHoneySin  Please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of both Sims 4 and the EA App, as described.  When you reinstall the EA App, you can click the option to customize your settings and choose the folder on D as the location for your game library.  It's usually enough to choose the proper location when actually installing Sims 4, but since you're reinstalling the App anyway, it's easy to change the game library location first.

@puzzlezaddictI've done the clean uninstall of both the sims 4 and the EA app as described in the link you sent. I'll update probably tomorrow since it takes so long to download, thanks again for all your help, I hope this finally fixes the issues.

@puzzlezaddictI continued to follow the instructions on the page you linked, checked that the packs were loading and working which they are. Moved my saves over, but when I try to load the saves in game, they are not listed. I doubled checked the file and sure enough they are in there, I also right clicked > properties and saw that the file pathway is D:\Games\The Sims 4\saves, so idk what to do next. I just saw that when I launch the game, it creates a new EA file on the C Drive. Also worth noting, the pathway shows C:drive > One Drive.

@BloodHoneySin  Before doing anything else, I would suggest getting rid of OneDrive, or at least stopping it from syncing your Documents folder.  OneDrive can complicate troubleshooting and, in the wrong circumstances, even delete files.  It's easiest to deal with this while OneDrive doesn't contain any critical data, for example your saves are currently elsewhere.

This guide shows how to stop OneDrive syncing or get rid of it:

    https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-PC/CURRENT-ISSUE-Sims-4-saves-user-content-disappearing-PC/m-p/12475370#M249772

Pick whichever category you prefer.  When you've changed the settings, open Command Prompt (you can search Windows for it) and run this command:

reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" /v "Personal"

This will return the location of Documents.  If it's still in OneDrive, use this method to change it:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/operation-to-change-a-personal-folder-location-fails-in-windows-ffb95139-6dbb-821d-27ec-62c9aaccd720

Once you've done that, let me know that it worked.  You'll also need to decide whether you want your Sims 4 saves and other user data on C or on D.  If C is fine, you can simply move your saves to the folder the game is reading, which it sounds like you already know how to find.  If you'd rather keep the saves on D, create a symbolic link to tell the game where to look:

  • I was having a similar issue to this where I couldn't install my game due to lack of disk space, but I was trying to install the game on my D drive and your article kind of helped me. I had to uninstall EA from my C drive and completely reinstall it on my D drive from scratch, then download my sims and then it showed that I could download it onto my D drive because thats where EA was originially downloaded. If you originally downloaded it to you C drive it will only all the game to install there even if you select the D drive. Moving folders did not work for me.
