Maxis is currently looking into this issue. I hope they'll find the cause.
It's unclear if those saves can be saved at this point or what's causing the issue. Any input is welcome so please post in this thread if you have the issue.
- Are you using custom content or mods in your game ? Not realted. Does not need answering anymore
- Do you have this issue only on a particular save game or on all of them ? I've tried loading them all and none have worked
- Can you start a new game for testing purposes ok ? If you mean new household, it also did not load past the map
- Do the backups of the saves work (Here's instructions how to access them) ? I don't believe so but I am unsure if I accessed the correct file
- If they do, do they corrupt after a while too ? N/A
- Do you have any lastexception.txt files in documents\electronicarts\thesims4\ ? If so, please zip them up (all of them) and upload to mediafire or dropbox and post the link here. https://www.dropbox.com/s/wpwo0rhjqayaix6/lastException%20files.zip?dl=0

Questions about your save game
- Have you been switching families or played one ? I've tried to open all of my households
- Do you remember what careers/aspiration the Sims in your household were in ? There are too many to remember...
- Are there children/teens in your family ? There are multiple children and teenagers throughout my Sim community.
- If you started a new game and had this issue, did you put in an older Sims family or completly start over from scratch ?
- Anything else you think important (no rants please) ? The game was working fine all day until around 8 pm CST which seems odd to me. (This was on Dec. 29th)
The only solution for now seems to be to remove the entire saves folder and start over.
Do not delete any save games just yet, move them to the desktop or some other place and try a new game.
