I started the game after updating and it will not let me start any of the families, including new families of never-before-played families.
I have the normal game including the Holiday Package.
I tried moving the Sims 4 folder to my desktop, opening a new game, and putting the folder back again. It works when I remove the Sims 4 folder from the EA folder. I can play with the households then, but everything I've built/saved is gone, obviously. When I put the Sims 4 folder back again I cannot open any family again.

Those saves are mostly backups so I tried the Slot_00000003.save but that was the McKenzie family currently active. The save did have the issue though and it's seems it's one of the unplayed families. I don't know how much you're attached to those but I don't have the time to figure out which one is causing the issue. Deleting them all solved the issue for me.
You can either also delete them all or try and narrow down which one by deleting them in groups and see if the issue reoccurs and if it does, reload the game (completely) and then try split that group in half until you find the culprit.
