"Folder doesn't exist" when updating game

So basically like the title says, I am unable to update my game because every time I try it says the folder destination doesn't exist. I am on a windows PC. I am using an external hard drive, but I have been using it for years and have never had this problem. I have tried clearing the cache and reinstalling the EA app but nothing seems to be working. There is also plenty of storage on the hard drive and the folder definitely exists.

  • @lilaposta  Do you have enough space on your computer to install the game twice, or at least the base game (about 20 GB)?  If so, try renaming the Sims 4 folder that contains the game's program files.  That's the folder you see when you open the EA App and select Sims 4 > Manage > View properties.

You'll need to close the EA App and kill the EABackgroundService in the Task Manager, if it's still running, before you can rename the folder.

Once you've renamed the folder, the App will think Sims 4 is no longer installed.  Create a new folder on the root level of the drive of your choice, for example C:\Games is fine, but not C:\Program Files\Games.  Try installing Sims 4 into that folder.  Disable your antivirus before creating the folder, and leave it disabled while trying to install the game.

If you don't have enough free storage for two copies of Sims 4, please clear more space, at least 25 GB in total.  This could be a source of error, although the App usually tells you when it thinks you don't have enough space to update.

  • @lilaposta  This particular error is typically antivirus-related, so please set an exception in yours for EADesktop.exe.  Once the game is updated, or you can try repairing instead, set exceptions for TS4_x64, TS4_DX9_x64, and TS4_Launcher_x64 as well, or the entire Bin folder they're in.

You may need to clear the EA App's cache as well:

If this doesn't help, try disabling your antivirus, temporarily of course, and updating or repairing.  As long as you don't do anything else at the same time, your computer should be safe, and you can reenable the AV after you've tested the game once, then set those exceptions.

@puzzlezaddict Unfortunately this didn't work. Now the download just doesn't make any progress and is stuck on "preparing".
