Game crashes in Live Mode after update

After 3/14/23's infant update fiasco, I waited for everything to calm down in regards to the EA app not working properly, and finally, my game had the availability to update. I thought it would be interesting to test that mods were broken so I played with mods as soon as it was ready to play and it actually wasn't that bad. My game was SUPER slow but definitely worked. I eventually exited the game, took my mods out, and went back in and my Live Mode would only work for like 2 Sim hours then "freeze. The Sims would continue whatever action they were doing indefinitely and the time on the clock wouldn't progress. I tried to save and then it just crashed. I logged back in and went to build mode and built a house and was able to save it just fine but when I went to play a test sim it just froze and crashed again. I'll be honest, since I got Sims 4, in all these years, my game has only crashed ONCE and I lost count of how many times it crashed last night.

I started doing all the things we're supposed to do; clear cache, repair game, repair EA app, delete EA app, over and over again and when I finally went to EA's chat help they told me to do the same thing I've been doing... I've been playing sims for over 20 years and I've never had to deal with this kinda stuff and I'm freakin out. I've got a Gen save that's been going on for like 5 years so I'm doing everything I can not to just nuke my whole game but also...

@RedEnigmaFilms  The fact that a new save works fine suggests that the problem is the old save, not your computer or the game overall.  Please try playing a backup version of your existing save, still with no mods.  Use the manual method of recovering backup saves here:

    https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2014/09/recover-backup-save-game/

Copy over the backups rather than just moving them, as you did with the main save, so the original backups will also remain intact.

If this doesn't help, please try loading a different household within your main save, preferably one in a different world, and let me know whether it helps.

  • @RedEnigmaFilms  As a test, please try playing a new save in a clean folder.  (I'm not saying you need to abandon your save, only that this is helpful for diagnostic purposes.)  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  Don't add anything to it yet; just start a new save and let me know whether it crashes.

If you do get a crash, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

If the new save is fine, you can copy your existing save to the new folder and test it as well, but don't add any other content yet.  Since you're copying rather than moving the save, you don't need to worry about the effects of missing mods and custom content—your original save will be intact in the old folder, and you can restore it later.

@puzzlezaddict Thanks for the advice! I'm currently in the process of redownloading the game and all the add-ons. I copied my save files and backed them up so I'm crossing my fingers on that.

If that doesn't work I'll give this a try as well. Thanks so much!

@puzzlezaddict ok, reinstalling the game didn't work. It crashed again. I followed your first steps to remove my save files and play it with a new save and it worked perfectly. I put my original saves (with no mods) back in and it crashed again.

I've attached my DxDaig to the comment. I truly do appreciate your help, seriously!

@RedEnigmaFilms  Thanks, and I'm glad it helped.  I have no idea what the rules are, but I don't have a Patreon and wouldn't accept any donations regardless.  I do this because I like helping and because I remember what it was like to need others' help back in the day.  Just enjoy your game.
