Game is constantly freezing every few seconds

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:PC
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
What is your current game version number? PC
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? Almost all of them
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? I have no idea.
What happens when the bug occurs? The game freezes every 5 seconds for 10-15 seconds or more and just continues this in a loop.
What do you expect to see? I expect for the game to be playable.
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Never used.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Yes
Please describe the patch or change you made. The most recent update to the game was the last thing that I did to my game before this started happening.

Ever since the last Sims 4 update my game is unplayable. The game will load at launch and take you to the home screen. It doesn't matter which family I choose, the game will constantly freeze every 5 seconds or so and stay frozen for 10-15 seconds and just continue this until i eventually have to manually exit the game.

I have no custom content or mods.

I have tried clearing cache.

I have repaired the game.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game.

I have removed all previous saves and started the game from scratch as if it's the first time it's ever been installed.

My computer is less than a year old and we bought it specifically for the Sims 4. There are no other games or anything downloaded on it and I've never had this issue playing the game before.

  • @njmille Could you post your Computer's DxDiag?

    - Press Windows-Key + R
    - Type: DxDiag
    - Click on Save all Information.
    - Attach the Text File to your post

Also moving this to the tech forum for troubleshooting help.

  • I'm having a similar issue. Severe lag/freezing following the update that seems to be an issue with my graphics card? I also received a message saying it didn't recognize my video card for the first time following the update, so I used the ConfigOverride and while I no longer receive the message, my game is still basically unplayable. Not sure if I should make my own post or not.

This sounds exactly like my situation!

  • Looking through my DxDiag, I actually was having an issue with my graphics driver. I had to uninstall it and go online and reinstall it from the manufacturer. Your DxDiag doesn't have the same error that mine did, so I'm not sure if we have a similar issue or not? On mine it said "Display Tab 3: There is a problem with AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics device. For more information, search for 'graphics device driver error code 22'" I don't see that on yours because it doesn't show the display tab 2 and 3. May be worth looking into?

@njmille  Among the many Sims 4 errors in your dxdiag are a couple crashes of an Intel service having to do with SSD storage.  So it would be a good idea to tell Windows to look for updates to it and any related drivers that might interact with it.  Hit Windows key-X, select the Device Manager, open the Storage controllers section, click the first entry, and click the black and green Update menu button.  Repeat for every entry in this section.  If Windows says you already have the most up-to-date driver, that's fine; the point is to check.  If anything installs, restart your computer afterwards.

For the Sims 4 issue itself, please do a manual uninstall and reinstall of the AMD graphics driver.  Here's how:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstaller-ddu.html

You can get a fresh copy of the newest driver here:

    https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-5500-series/amd-radeon-rx-5500-series/amd-radeon-rx-5500

You'll want the WHQL driver dated December 5; don't use the auto-detect tool, which wouldn't replace your existing driver.  Restart after installing and before trying to play.

When testing, please move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop so the game has to generate a new folder.  Let me know if this doesn't happen, or if you can't move the folder because it copies or throws an error.

If you get another freeze, please try playing in a clean boot:

The one service to leave enabled is the EABackgroundService, which the EA App needs in order to run.  Disable the rest as described.

When you reboot your computer, go through the Task Manager's background processes list shutting down any service that doesn't absolutely need to be running, for example anything from MSI Afterburner to RGB software might still be enabled.  If you accidentally kill a critical process and it doesn't restart on its own, just reboot your computer again.

Don't open anything other than Sims 4 and the EA App while testing, not even a browser window.

@covening  Your laptop has multiple display tabs becuase it has multiple display devices; this user does not.  It's not indicative of a problem.

I tried all of the things listed below. We even went as far as factory resetting our whole computer. I re-downloaded all the games and it’s still having the same issue as before.

@njmille  Factory reset, as in, this is a completely fresh Windows install with none of your previous data?  If so, please provide a new dxdiag; the old one won't be relevant anymore.
