Game Keeps Crashing (Tried Everything)

My game has been crashing since Jan 2025 and I've tried everything to fix, but nothing works. I've taken out all mods, started a new save, stopped overclocking, updated my graphics driver to the most recent version, made sure my game was fully updated, repaired my game, uninstalled and re-installed both the EA app and the Sims 4, made sure I was playing on DirectX11, played offline and online, and deleted my localthumbcache. And I've also done a variety of all those things at the same time. Still, nothing works. The game crashes anywhere ranging from 5 - 30 minutes and I'm so frustrated.

Is there anything else I can do? Please help.

Hi, I did do a clean uninstall and reinstall using the Display Driver Unistaller but that didn't help. I ended up just playing the game and letting it crash a couple times and going back to solve whatever issue popped up in my Reliability Monitor and doing some research until my game started working. It looks like my Intel Turbo Boost was enabled, despite my PC no longer being overclocked. For anyone's future reference, I went into my BIOS, then went into my OC settings (I have msi Click BIOS 5), and found the Intel Turbo Boost under "Advanced CPU Configuration" and disabled it. For anyone with a different settings setup, you should be able to find the Turbo Boost under the "Performance" section of your BIOS. Anyway, I reset my computer and now my game works again. Thank you so much for your help!!!!

  • xombie_potion  If you haven't already, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop.  When you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you've moved but temporarily unread by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just start a new save and see how it runs.

If you get another crash, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

I removed my Sims 4 folder and started a clean game. After 7 minutes of playing, it crashed again. Here's my dxdiag scan.

  • xombie_potion  Your dxdiag lists several crashes of the graphics driver, so please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the driver, as described here:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstaller-ddu.html

If the game continues to crash, I'd like the Reliability Monitor info from at least three crashes post-DDU.  Click Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes, and you'll see a chart of errors and updates with a column for each day.  Today is on the right.

Look for errors that happened at exactly the time of any post-DDU Sims 4 crash.  If you find one, double-click it to see more details, then copy that info and paste it into a reply here.  For identical errors, just say you saw two or three of them that look like [error].  If you don't see a new error, check back in an hour or so—the Reliability Monitor doesn't always update right away.

Hi, I updated my drivers and the game still crashes about 5 - 10 minutes in, but it freezes instead of crashing straight to desktop (maybe an improvement).

Here are 3 error reports from my Reliability Monitor.

After seeing the hardware error, I went ahead and tried to fix it myself. It seems that the Kernel issue is resolved, but the game keeps crashing. Here are the new errors.

(I tried fixing the blue screen by going to my command console in admin mode, typing in bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto, and restarting. Unsure if that helped or not).

The Kernal error no longer pops up

  • xombie_potion  Did you update your graphics driver, or did you clean-uninstall and reinstall it, like I was suggesting?  They're not the same, even if you chose to do the Nvidia version of a clean install of the new driver.  Please use Display Driver Uninstaller if you haven't already.

The BlueScreen with code 20001 is a hypervisor error, related to running a virtual machine, but that doesn't necessarily mean that a VM is directly responsible.  Still, are you running one?  Do you use other virtualization software at all?  If you do, please make sure it's not running while you play Sims 4.

For the second error, the "Sims 4 stopped working" one, did the game crash while you were in CAS, Build/Buy, or live mode?  The crash itself doesn't have enough information to be useful (the game crashed because it crashed because it did something that wasn't allowed), but the context might be interesting.

Additionally, have you overclocked any components of your PC?  If so, please return everything to stock settings, at least while we're troubleshooting the issue.
