Game keeps crashing, unplayable

I have thousands of hours on this game, but in the past month it has become completely unplayable.  The game crashes constantly within the first five minutes, with sometimes crashing even during start.  It can crash in live mode, going into build mode, moving to another tab in build mode, etc.  I have tried everything I can with my okay knowledge of PCs, including reinstalling the game, repairing game files, trying to run it in directx 11 (which made it worse), updating my drivers, changing my game settings, etc.

Not sure what information you would need to diagnose, but here is what shows when I run the diagnostic tool:

Operating System Windows 11

Processor 13th gen intel core i9-13900kf

DirectX 12

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070ti

I have all of the expansions and packs, along with most of the kits.  I do not play with any mods.  I really want to play longer than five minutes without it crashing on me.  Is there anything I can do?  Is anyone else experiencing this?

  • LazySundayCat  Try updating your motherboard's BIOS, if you know how.  Find your exact board model and google "[model name] support," and look for the manufacturer's support page.  If you list your board and BIOS version, I can look for you as well.

If that doesn't help, or you don't know how to proceed, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

The dxdiag will list the BIOS version on the first page as well, in case you don't find it on your own.

  • LazySundayCat  One of the Sims 4 crashes is likely related to the BIOS/overclocking issue I mentioned, and the others could be related as well.  Plus, your BIOS version is over two years old.  So please install the newest-available version, which you can find here:

    https://asrock.com/MB/Intel/Z690-CD5/index.us.asp#BIOS

If that doesn't help, boot into BIOS and disable CPU Turbo Boost, which should be somewhere (exactly where varies a lot) under Advanced settings.

If that doesn't help either, please look for new errors in the Reliability Monitor.  Hit Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes, and you'll see a chart of errors and updates with a column for each day.  Today is on the right.

Look for an error that happened at exactly the time of your most recent Sims 4 crash.  If you find one, double-click it to see more details, then copy that info and paste it into a reply here.  If you don't see a new error, check back in an hour or so—the Reliability Monitor doesn't always update right away.
