Help me pick a good laptop

Hello! I need help with picking a good laptop that would run sims 4 well, since my current laptop is too old and can reach only 5-20fps, even at low/medium graphics.

I currently have all the packs, 6gb of cc and 90% of that is CAS (without high poly alpha hairs and such), and I don't have any cc objects apart from some clutter. I use only a few essential script mods (ui cheats, pose player) and not the ones that alter the gameplay. I am planning on keeping it that way with the new laptop as well, since I don't like heavy mods anyway.

Also I'm currently not interested in the newest games, I'd play sims 4 only, use internet and some office programs if needed for college.

When it comes to graphics, I don't need everything to be ultra, I am willing to lower some settings (maybe even turn off edge smoothing) but keep the rest on high at least (sims and lighting quality matter to me).

I've found two new laptops online but I'm not sure whether they're good enough. They are:

1. HP Victus 15-fb1006nm

- Ryzen 5 7535HS

- RTX 2050

- 8gb ram

- 512gb SSD

2. Lenovo LOQ 15IAX9I

- Intel Core i5 12450HX

- Intel Arc A530M

- 16gb ram

- 512gb SSD

If I end up getting the Victus one, will an RTX 2050 be a problem? I've tried looking everywhere for an RTX 3050 at least, but it's already above my budget. RTX 2050 is obviously better than any integrated graphics, but could it at least give me the 60 fps I want? Either that, or maybe a GTX 1650? Also, I'd like to upgrade to 16gb ram but I've never done it before so I'm a bit worried about voiding the warranty.

The A530M is new enough that there aren't a lot of reliable benchmarks for it, but it looks to be about the same speed as the RTX 2050, maybe slightly slower.  That is of course an average and doesn't tell you how the GPUs would compare in Sims 4 specifically.  I can tell you that when the first generation of Arc graphics came out, I saw some issues related to the GPU made the game unplayable, but those seem to have been resolved over a year ago.  I also don't see a lot of players using Arc graphics though.

As for installing more RAM, whether it voids the warranty depends on the laptop manufacturer.  Some specifically make their gaming laptops user-upgradable, at least as far as memory is concerned; others do not.  But you should be able to add more RAM to almost any gaming laptop—it's extremely simple for any model that doesn't have soldered memory, which is still unusual in gaming machines.  You could also hold off until the warranty is expired anyway, which might only be a year.

If you'd like, I can look for other good laptops for you.  Just list your budget and country as well as any other details that matter.  Or if you'd prefer to do the shopping yourself, find the user support forums for whichever models you're considering and look for memory upgrade questions.  Someone else will have asked whether this voids the warranty.

Sorry for the late reply. I'm going to get a PC instead, and I found one with an RTX 3050. It's a lot cheaper than the laptops I've found, which will allow me to get a nice monitor and everything else I might need.  Thank you very much for your help and detailed answer!

  • lushhlavah  That's an even better option, since the desktop RTX 3050 is something like 30% faster than its laptop counterpart.  It should work out great for you.
