How do I change the game from 64 bit to 32 bit?

I play on windows so origin is not supported which is what the game has been telling me to go through but I play the game on steam through the EA app and I can't find the option to switch to 32 bit anywhere. The message I get is " You are running the 64 bit game executable on a system that does not meet recommended specifications and may experience instability or performance problems. We recommend that you switch to the 32 bit executable in Origin via the game properties panel." Can someone please help me I just want to play the game without it crashing or bugging or lagging every 5 seconds lol.

  • @mynameisLihahaha  The 32-bit version of Sims 4 is no longer available: it was officially retired in December of last year.  So your only option is the 64-bit version.

Are you seeing any actual performance issues?  If so, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

Either way, please post a screenshot of the error you're seeing.  I'd like to report it to EA people since it's unhelpful and misleading at this point in time.

@qpka8slq1eid  Your computer is significantly below the minimum requirements for Sims 4.  I'm not sure there's much you can do here, unfortunately.  The graphics chip doesn't have a newer driver, and the 3 GB RAM is extremely limiting in Windows 10.  You can upgrade the memory if you can find supported modules, but I'm not sure it's worth investing any money into this machine given its age.

Without spending money, the only suggestion I have is to increase the size of the page file.  Here's how (option one):

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/77692-manage-virtual-memory-pagefile-windows-10-a.html#option1

Set the minimum to 12288 and the max to 16384, and restart the computer.

@Annalisetteo11  Access to your dxdiag is restricted.  Please either change it so that "anyone with this link" can read it, or attach the dxdiag to a reply here.

  • yes. i have this issue to. i have the same problem now. i have 64 bits but in the game it says i have to change to 32 bits which i can’t do. is there another option u can help?

@dxx83ocf00mb  Your first screenshot shows that almost all system memory is in use.  That's not surprising with only 4 GB RAM installed, and a bit of that set aside for the integrated graphics chip.  It's probably also the source of the error.

You can still play Sims 4, but I would suggest not running anything alongside the game, to keep as much memory available as possible.  Additionally, open the Task Manager's Startup section and disable any apps that don't need to be running all the time.  Only a few do need to start with Windows: the Intel graphics software, Windows Defender or whatever antivirus you use, that kind of thing.  Everything else (Edge, the EA App, random update services) can stay closed until you open them manually.

When you're ready to play Sims 4, restart your computer immediately beforehand, and don't open anything aside from the game and the EA App.  Let me know how it runs.

  • The same message popped up when I started the game too. My laptop is new and I know nothing about this computer stuff! I just wanna play Sims😭 Someone help me.

  • HelloKittyCutiex  Please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

Separately, how does the game run on your computer?  Do you have any other apps open when you try to play?  If so, see whether closing them helps, or better yet, restart your computer and don't open anything aside from the EA App and Sims 4.

  • Hey! Thanks for replying : )

You described the steps well and they were easy to follow. It's a bit laggy and slow when I'm playing the Sims 4 game. The Adobe Illustrator app was open while playing, but I've played it without it open and it's still glitchy.

  • mynameisLihahah  Your dxdiag shows a few crashes of a component of McAfee, so I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling it, or just removing it if you don't have any particular use for it.  A reinstall should fix the crashes, but McAfee isn't really any better than Windows Defender and often uses a lot more resources.  Here's how to remove it (standard method, option two), whether you're reinstalling it or not:

    https://www.mcafee.com/support/s/article/000001616?language=en_US

However, I think the underlying issue may be your computer's 4 GB memory.  While that's technically the minimum requirement for Sims 4, the game tends to need more RAM in practice, especially if you have almost any expansions installed.  (Game packs and stuff packs are mostly less demanding, and kits have a negligible effect.)  That doesn't mean you can't play, but you'll need to take some steps to help the game run better, and you may never get exactly the performance you want.

For now, open the Task Manager, click the Startup icon, and disable anything that does not absolutely need to be running at startup.  That really means anything not from Intel, Realtek, and possibly Windows Security, depending on whether you've removed McAfee.  Other apps like Edge or Teams or Acer registration software might be listed too, which would mean they automatically start with Windows and take up resources your laptop can't spare.  Disabling them on startup doesn't mean you can't use them, only that they won't open on their own.

If you're not sure what you're looking at, feel free to post a screenshot of the Startup list, and I'll let you know what you can disable and what should stay active.
