How do I play multiple households in a neighborhood?

In the original Sims each household was it's own saved game and you could play multiple households in the neighborhood without your other households changing.  In the Sims 4 it seems that all households in a neighborhood are running in the background all the time.  Is there a way to turn this off?  I want to be able to play different households without worrying that my original family are moving on without me!

I'm not really very tech savvy so please keep it simple!

  • You can create a new family from within the game.

Either choose the lot you want the family to live and create a new family from the menu there (I'll add pics later if you don't find it) or click on the icon with the two people in the upper right corner on map view and create a new family from the household manager.

You can also split your family there to have them move out.

  • Hi,

there's no full Story Progression in Sims 4 like there was in Sims 3.

There are a few things they do while you're not playing them

    • Get a job
    • Skill up
    • Make friends
    • Go about their daily lives and roam about town.

They won't however get pregnant, get married or move without you activity telling them to.

They might fall in love but I'm unsure if that was a bug and is not not happening anymore or if it still occurs, especially for flirty Sims.

As for aging, that can be turned off in your game options. You have a choice who is aging. Played household means the households you have played at one point, unplayed means, you've never touched them and active would be the one you're currently playing.

    Hope that answers your question.

  • Thanks, I was afraid that was the case.

Does anybody know how to play a neighbourhood without it resetting every time you create a new family? I want all my families to be able to interact, and move on, with each other.  Even more, I want  to be able to fill in the gaps on the empty lots and in the empty houses!  Every time I make a family to move in the neighbourhood seems to reset to the original settings.

I've never played Sims2 or 3.  I only got Sims4 because I couldn't get the original Sims to work on my laptop anymore.

Thanks for your help.  I really appreciate it.

I miss the old printed game manuals that actually told you how to play the game.  I wouldn't mind a downloaded one if only it was a bit more detailed.

  • This is untrue, my sims family got pregnant while I played in another household, and the husband cheated on his wife with a neighbor and when I noticed she was also pregnant, and you can visit their household and see that he has his son and daughter with this other woman. Which I didn’t play, and no one played in my laptop either. All happened by itself.

    Hi there.

Since this is a pretty old thread that hasn't been updated in several years I went ahead and locked it.

If you need some help with an issue like this please create a new thread, and we'll take a look.

    Thanks!
