I can't change the color of clothes in the sims or build anything in build mode.

I opened up the game with the 21st anniversary update, and things seemed normal at first! I could change the color of accessories and hair, but when I moved to clothing it wouldn't work. It would make the click noise and show the drop down menu arrow, but didn't show any colors, and when I would click where the menu should be, it just selected the clothing below it. Then it only got worse when I went into build mode. I could not see ANYTHING. I could click on the different menus, but it didn't show a single item! And when I clicked walls, I couldn't see either. I wasn't even able to PLACE anything! It showed I had a option selected for the item filter, "...", but when I clicked on it nothing would happen. I was completely stuck. 
I do have mods on, I needed them for a story I was going to make.
