I can't load any of my saved games!

So all of a sudden I can't load any of my saved games. The loading screens continue to load for hours. I can create a new save and start the game. I tested to see if once in the game If I could go back to the main menu and then load my saves and it works. So, anytime I want to play one of my previous saves, I have to create a new save to load into the game, go back to the main menu, and then load the old save.

  • @24papichulo  Do the lots in question use the Off the Grid challenge?  That's currently broken and can cause infinite loading.  You can remove the challenge in Build mode without loading the lot: choose Load Game rather than Resume, click the lot in question, and enter Build mode from there.

If that doesn't help, can you load one of the new saves you've made after the first time you play it?  I understand you're currently making a new save each time.  My question is whether you can have just one new save that you always load first, or whether the save you load first needs to be brand-new.

The game makes me load a brand new game file meaning I have to go through creat a sim, place a household, and then go back to the main menu each time. I wasn't aware that I had an off-the-gride challenge mode in my game. I do not recall putting anything like that in my game and its dong it with every save new and old once I exit and re-enter the game.

@24papichulo  Some lots use Off the Grid by default, but I doubt this is your issue unless you're trying to play the same lot in each new save.  If you are, try a different lot, in one of the base game worlds, instead.

Otherwise, is OneDrive running on your computer?  If so, try pausing syncing, which you can do by right-clicking the cloud icon in the lower-right corner of the screen.  It might be hidden in the Tray, so click the ^ icon if you don't see it.

If that doesn't help, what antivirus do you use, and have you set exceptions for the game?  You'd need to add them for TS4_x64, TS4_DX9_x64, and TS4_Launcher_x64; or the entire Bin folder they're in.

Please also run a dxdiag and attach it to you reply.

  • I'm having the same issue! I don't play with the off the Grid trait. I have tried without mods (and I've tried a bunch of fixes now.) I can create a new game and play fine. When I try to reload into a save (any save with some playtime) I get the infinite loading screen.

Expanded explanation: I play a new save for an hour or two. Sometimes I can reload once or twice back into that save but it eventually inevitably wont reload. I can't find a pattern of why it breaks. I have been through many new save files now! Including save files made by other simmers such as the completely blank save by srslysims - these load fine, but again, once played they will then no longer reload. I have to force power off my laptop as I can no longer switch to task manager (A known issue with one of the recent updates.)

Deleting thumbcashe etc. doesn't resolve it. Removing mods also didn't resolve it. Nor did removing lot traits. Nor switching to DX9. I updated my drivers and it also didn't resolve it. I have tried reloading into the saves via load game and resume. I am trying a complete fresh install now.

One drive is not running on my computer.

    I use the windows defender pre-installed anti-virus.

This is an issue after I updated, but I can't remember which update caused it - maybe the lovestruck or Dx11 update?

I have seen other complaints of this issue on the reddit bug thread.

    I have attached DxDiag file.

@SunRainKittens  When you create a new save with no mods or custom content, and save/quit/reload, can you load that new save again, or has it corrupted too?

Separately, when you load a previous save, do you get a lastexception in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4?  Please delete all current LEs so that if the game generates a new one, its data is completely fresh.  You can attach it here as a .txt file if you delete the LE's first line.

Your dxdiag doesn't show any obvious reason for the issue, but that's not surprising given the symptoms you've described.
