I have no sound - The Sims 4

I have no sound when I start my game.

Then, when I exit my game it never actually exits and freezes forcing me to restart my computer. Even pulling up the Task Manager will not work.

I have read every topic on here searching for an answer. My drivers are updated, selecting the Spatial sound doesn't work, I don't have have the nosound command on, Nahimic is not install on my PC, nothing on my PC sound settings is muted, etc...

HOWEVER, deleting the CONFIG and OPTIONS file DOES work. That being said I must do this EVERY time I start the game.

This is extremely frustrating as I play on my TV and have to have special settings in order for gameplay to work.

Deleting those files resets all settings. So in order to play with sound I have to pull up my files, delete those 2, start my game, select turn off the automatic size setting error that pops up, reselect  and configure my settings (I have to select the largest screen size and turn the accessibility bar up to right before the red section), then I can play.

I understand this is a working solution but I figured it would be corrected by the most recent update and it was not. (It started after the update before last) I have never posted on here before but this is very annoying and I can't find anything out there with my exact issue and want it to be known since it has not been repaired with update(s). Unlikely but maybe no one has reported this yet.

Oh, last thing if I use this work around the game DOES NOT crash and freeze my computer when I  exit. It only does that if I do not take these steps.

  • @ToriBartlett  The config.log is just output, a report on your hardware and settings as the game reads them when it launches.  The file gets overwritten at launch each time, so deleting it shouldn't have any impact.

If you delete options.ini, load the game, and do not change any settings, do you still have no sound and a freeze the second time around?  Do you have the same issue if you use a different sound output device?  I realize that headphones might not be convenient based on your setup, but please try them, or something else you don't normally use, just to see whether it makes a difference.

Please also run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

Deleting only the options from the sims folder behaved the same as deleting both it and the config. It still reset all my settings, but it gives me sound and doesn't crash on exit. The same problem occurs; as in I must perform this each time and each time I must redo my settings.

I realize this is a working "work around" it is just very inconvenient and should be unnecessary to play my game.

Unfortunately, I do not own any other sound output devices at this time... I do not have this problem with any other game I own, and all drivers are up to date.

I attached my report as you recommended.

@ToriBartlett  Deleting or not deleting config.log should have no effect at all, that's what I was saying.  Since it's just output, deleting it neither helps with crashing/freezing nor erases your settings.

My question was whether you have the same issue if you delete options.ini, load Sims 4, don't change any in-game settings, play a bit, quit, and reload.  Please try this and let me know.  I realize you need to change some options to play properly, but again, this is not supposed to be a solution or viable workaround, just an experiment that will hopefully provide useful information.

Your Realtek audio driver is from 2015, which could be the issue, although I'd still like you to try the above.  Since your dxdiag also lists a number of errors with Windows components, please run a couple of basic checks on your Windows system files:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes into the window, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes into the window, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

Restart your computer, hit Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the button to check for updates.  If any install, restart again afterwards.

Now try manually updating your audio drivers.  Hit Windows key-X, select Device Manager, open the Audio section, click on the Realtek entry, and click the green and black Update button at the top of the window.  Repeat for any other entries that have Realtek in the name, then open the Sound section and repeat.  Restart when you're done.

After you've done all this, please let me know whether you have the same issue both when you change your in-game options and when you don't.  If you still don't have sound, please post a new dxdiag so I can compare the driver versions.

Yes, sorry for the confusion I understood what you were saying about the file. I was confirming that it caused the same behavior.

Also, yes not changing the settings works exactly the same.

All in all as long as the options file is deleted and I start the game it works fine.

If I do not delete that file is where the issue is. I have to delete it before I open the game each time.

If not there is no sound and it freezes/crashes my computer at exit.

The first run had no errors, the second gave this message -

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

The system file repair changes will take effect after the next reboot.
    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32>

I followed the rest of your recommendations and did have a couple updates as well. A security update then a realtek update.

I did my final restart with high hopes!... but same issue nothing has changed.

@ToriBartlett  Try doing a clean uninstall and reinstall of the graphics driver, as described in this article:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstaller-ddu.html

This is the driver for your card:

    https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-r9-series/amd-radeon-r9-300-series/amd-radeon-r9-380

Restart when you're done and before trying to play.

If that doesn't help, do you have headphones or earbuds you could temporarily plug in?  Even if the computer isn't in a convenient place for you to use them while playing, please at least check whether you have sound the second time you launch after deleting options.ini.

If that doesn't help or you don't have headphones, please run a new dxdiag and attach it to a post.  I'd like to look for any errors that are new since we started troubleshooting.
