Infinite load screen after May 28, 2024 update

I updated my game after the May 28th, 2024 update and now I can't load into my active household. I get an infinite load screen. I always remove my entire Mods folder (mods, CC, everything) and clear my cache files after every update as standard practice so I was running the game with no mods, no custom content, and clean cache files.

What happens exactly:

1) I run the game, I successfully get to the main menu

2) I click the Resume button to return to my last played household

3) I go into a load screen but the load screen never ends and the household never loads

I am running the fully updated game on Windows 10 (1.107.112.1030). As stated previously, NO mods or custom content are installed and I have cleared my cache files.

I do not know if this is a contributing factor but I will mention it anyway; I have a DirectX11 compatible computer so I initially tried to run the game with the -dx11 command prompt to use that renderer. I experienced the same issue I described above. I then removed that command and restarted but it did not change the problem at all.

  • I'm returning with an update because I was able to fix the problem by resetting my Sims 4 folder. Essentially resetting the game without reinstalling. Repairing the game via the EA App did not fix the problem.

For anyone who doesn't know how to do this:

    1. Navigate to Documents > Electronic Arts and move the entire Sims 4 folder to your desktop. Do not delete it if you have saves, mods, Gallery builds, or screenshots/video you want to salvage. Just keep it on your desktop.

    2. Run the game. Exit the game when you reach the main menu. This will generate a brand new Sims 4 folder in your Electronic Arts folder.

    3. Replace the saves, tray, screenshots, recorded videos, and mods folders in the fresh Sims 4 folder with the same folders in your old Sims 4 folder on your desktop to restore your save data, pictures and videos, Gallery builds, and mods/CC.

    4. You should now be able to access your household again.

If these steps don't work for you, remember to update your mods or remove them. I also updated my graphics driver so try that as well if your driver needs an update.

  • I've tried this and it didn't work for me; a couple of odd notes i wanted to add to the conversation: if I enter another save, go back to main menu and open my "frozen" save, it loads me in almost instantly. Also, when I'm playing in any save, I am no longer able to alt tab out of my game, both when its infinite loading and when its running smoothly. I have also tried to pull a previous save file for the save that makes my game load infinitely (it was my "active" save when the update dropped), but this didn't work either.

@FadingDoor604  The inability to alt-tab is a known issue with the DirectX 11 version of Sims 4.  Are you using DX11, and does the problem go away if you switch back to DX9?  Does that help you load the save?

And to be clear, is only one save affected, or multiple?  If only the one, can you load a different household within that save, either in the same world or a different one?

  • Good catch! I started using DX11 after the infinite load issue began, but you're right, I disabled it and now I can tab in and out.

That is odd...I did my trick to get into my save, loaded one of my other households, saved the game and restarted it. This time when I tried to load the save with that family, it loaded in without issue. Do you think the original family is corrupted somehow, even though there isn't the orange symbol above their house?

@FadingDoor604  There are multiple types of corruption, and there are also errors that aren't corruption exactly but can still prevent a household from loading.  If you want to troubleshoot that issue, I'd suggest posting in the Game Issues forum, not because I don't want to help but because Crinrict is a lot better at that kind of thing.

If you'd like to do some testing yourself, put the household on a different lot.  If you can load them there, the problem is likely the old lot; otherwise, it's one or more of the sims.  Either way, this may be fixable once you identify the source of the problem.

  • So this just happened to me recently in a household that I have been playing for a little while. (I do use mods and CC, but do not use DirectX 11.) It's a mermaid household in Sulani and both of my mermaids had traveled together to Mua Pel'am to complete their conservationist career tasks.

While my sims were there, 2 NPC sims spawned as a "Litter Bug" and an "Anti-Environmentalist". My mermaid sims confronted both about their wrongdoings, etc. The one NPC had on all sorts of CC that the game had assigned her, and frankly, she looked pretty crazy, so I went into CAS and cleaned her up a bit. But when I exited CAS, I got an endless loading screen. I couldn't even close the game - I had to do it through Task Manager. Then I went back into the game and tried to load my sims (who were still on Mua Pel'am) and I once again got an endless loading screen. I tried multiple times and the same thing kept happening. However, I was able to load their home lot, since their son was home, and then bring them home from there. So that told me the issue wasn't with my sims, but with something or someone on the Mua Pel'am lot. I had a feeling it was likely broken CC on one of the 2 NPCs that had spawned while my sims were there.

So I followed all the steps listed above as far as moving my Sims 4 folder onto my desktop, opening the game to generate a new folder, and then putting each of the folders back (saves, tray, mods, etc.). I then launched the game again, tried to load my sims on Mua Pel'am, and I still got the endless loading screen. So I then spent hours doing the painful and time consuming 50/50 method with everything in my Mods folder and ultimately was able to determine that the issue lay somewhere in the folder I have for CC hair. That folder contained over 1300 files of CC hair! It took quite a while but again using the 50/50 method, I was able to eventually narrow it down to the exact CC file that was causing the issue. I deleted that bad CC file, restarted my game, and I was able to finally load my sims and the Mua Pel'am lot with no problem. My game has run perfectly since.

So if you are someone who uses CC/mods -  that can potentially be one cause of an endless loading screen.

  • I still didnt manage to fix it.

Its annoying...tried every single fix and its still stuck on loading screen when i choose my household.

@566ea5b78f653250  Please go into Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 and delete any lastexception files you see.  Try again to load the household that isn't working, and when it fails, look for a new lastexception.  If you find one, attach it to a reply here.  You need to delete the file's first line in order for the upload to work.

Please test with no mods or custom content, as in, move the Mods folder to the desktop.  If you get an error message while trying to load the household, please post a screenshot.

I tried this and moved my Sims 4 folder on my desktop, I didnt delete or touch it prior I just moved it.

I boot up the sims and it looks promising, I exit out and open the folder on my desktop and somehow it just reset all my saves, households, gallery info, etc.

if I try to delete something off of the desktop folder, it deletes it in the game folder itself.

I guess in hopes of trying to get one household to load after an update I lost everything. Great.

  • @Rhinzi  Moving the user folder moves your saves and other user data to where Sims 4 can't read it.  This doesn't delete the content, just makes it unavailable.  This is a useful test because it distinguishes between issues related to the user folder's contents and more global problems.

However, changing something in the Sims 4 folder on your desktop shouldn't have any effect on the folder in Documents > Electronic Arts.  Is OneDrive running on your computer?  Even if you never use it, maybe it's syncing files in an odd way.  You can avoid this by pausing syncing.  To see the option, right-click the cloud icon in the lower-right corner of your screen.  It might be hidden in the Tray (^ icon) instead.

Please also let me know whether you can play a new save, without problems, with your Sims 4 user folder on your desktop.  If you run into the same issue, please provide a dxdiag here.
