Lost Saved Games, Replaced with Old Files??

An auto-update on Sims 4 today caused an initialization error that I had to troubleshoot, as it wouldn't let me open the game at all. After trying some troubleshooting, I was able to open the game again, but it's completely lost my most recent saved files, played as recently as yesterday.

However, it recovered old files that I thought I had lost, from a separate device that crashed over a year ago. I don't know how those files would even be on this new device, other than some automatic cloud saving that I'm not skilled enough to know that I even had set up.

I'm fairly sure I screwed up when I was transferring my EA folder from Documents into Desktop; I believe it asked me about replacing some files with the same name, though I can't recall exactly. I didn't know what I was doing, and now I'm afraid my newest save files are lost forever. They're not in my Recycle Bin. I've tried so much troubleshooting at this point, and am hoping I can get on a live call with EA support or Geek Squad to help ASAP. But I figured I'd ask here too.

It seems unlikely that the files could be completely lost, since somehow I'm able to accidentally recover files that I thought were lost over a year ago. How can I get my most recent saved game back up and running??

  • CaseyScoggins  Sorry for the late reply.  Try looking on onedrive.com, both in My Files and the Recycle Bin.  Look for files that start with Slot_ , as these would be saves, and check their dates to see if you still have any of your newer ones.

If you do find and restore newer files but they don't load in-game, please post a screenshot of the contents of the saves folder, as in, I'd like to see the file names and dates.

If you don't find any saves on onedrive.com, search your PC as well.  Open a File Explorer window, click This PC in the left panel, and enter Slot_ in the search field in the upper-right corner.  The search may take a while, but when it's done, you'll be able to see the dates and locations of any save files still present.

As for why this happened, OneDrive is enabled automatically in most cases, without the system really explaining what that means or the potential consequences. It sounds like OneDrive did sync some of your files from your previous computer.  It also sounds like you may have let your computer overwrite some of your new files with older copies when you moved the Sims 4 folder.  But hopefully at least some of the newer saves are still available, in the wrong location or named incorrectly.

If you're not sure what you're looking at, feel free to post screenshots.
