Moving Game and Mods to a New Drive

Hi! I'm having a lot of trouble with my TS4 game, I think I might've broken something...

To free up space, I moved my Sims 4 game onto my D drive. I tried moving my Mods folder and saves onto the D drive as well. At first, it worked! But then I realized, when I tried to download new CC, it wouldn't load into the game even though it was in the Mods folder on the D drive.

I tried moving the Mods folder back to the C drive (its original place before moving onto new D drive), then back onto the D drive and everything just went wrong. I tried a whole bunch of things, and I noticed, my saves load when the folder with JUST MY CC and MODS is on the D drive, but none of the CC or mods load onto the game. When I try to move the other folders that are in the Electronic Arts/The Sims 4 folders (cache, cachestr, saves, tray, etc.), NOTHING loads and it is just the regular TS4 game.

I'm really at a lost on what to do. I've been working on this for days. If anyone can help me, I would be more than grateful and appreciatie. THANK YOU!

The game has two folders. One folder with installation files was created in Program Files when you downloaded the game. It doesn't matter which drive it uses.
The second game folder the game creates when you first time turning on the game. This folder by default is placed on C drive in Documents. There is your current game - mods folder, saves folder, library - Tray folder and so on.
If you will move this folder to another drive the game simply will create and use the next folder on C drive in Documents.
So you have to move the whole Documents folder to another drive. How to do it depends on the system you are using.
Here is the formula for Win 10

    I don't work for EA

  • @tenbandz It would help if I knew what information you want to move.
There is two directories for the sims 4 all user related data goes into ~/documents or my_documents folder under Electronic Arts/The Sims 4
The other part is in /program_files(x86)/Origin/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4. If you want to move the Sims 4 program over to the new drive as well, the easiest way is to reinstall the sims 4.

    1. In origin launcher select Origin on the menu at the top left hand corner menu bar, now select application settings.
    2. select the tab at the top called "installs & Saves"
    3. Now go down to the selection 2 selection that says "Game Library Location, paste this into the dialog box that shows up after you click on it where it says folders at the bottom right "D:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 4, now add your Sims 4 directory the whole thing into that area and reinstall the game through origin to make sure the library points to new links.

The user file in my_documents or Documents click on the document shortcut and there is a button that says move my_document folder to new location, once you click that everything in my document folder will move to the new location. it won't be on the folder itself, but it will be on the shortcut. If you don't want to move everything to the new drive and Just The Sims 4 Game you can always try a directory shortcut, sometimes it doesn't work with programs though.
  • Thank you so much for responding!!!

When I first moved all the files over to the D drive I used this method of moving the entire documents folder and linking it to the D drive. My CC and saves loaded into the game, everything worked perfectly. When I tried to download NEW CC and mods, it wasn't loading into the game. So I tried to move the Documents folder back to the C drive, and then move it AGAIN to the D drive, but it didn't work and now everything is messed up. It'll say "Unrecognized video capture" or something like that.

I did a little trial and error and would move a folder at a time from the EA/The Sims 4 folders to the D drive to see if I could fix it.

It was weird because when I had the folder named "Mods" it loaded my saves but no CC or mods, but the only things in that folder are Mods and CC... Idk I'm pretty sure I messed everything up badly...(UPDATE: I don't have the Mods folder on the D drive anymore but my saves are there... i'm so confused sorry!!!!)

I made sure I have TS4 game installed on the D drive. The picture is everything I have in my documents folder on the C drive. (Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/what you see in the picture). My documents folder's current location is "C:\Users\mayas(my name)\Documents"

The second photo is everything on my D drive. Inside the Origin Games folder is TS4 game with a bunch of other folder in there...

Hopefully this gives you a better understanding of my issue!

I'm trying to move my Mods folder (CC & Mods) onto my D drive. I was able to move my Sims 4 game onto the D drive and that's working fine. I successfully moved my Mods folder once until I tried to download new CC and it was not loading onto the game. I tried to redo the process but everything got messed up. Here's whats in my documents folder on my C drive and whats on my D drive...

  • hey was this ever fixed? I'm currently having this issue and nothing suggested has worked
