I was able to fix this by uninstalling and re-installing the game with the EA app. I think it's worth mentioning that I really did have to download the entire thing from scratch. Trying to "trick" the app by putting the old files back into place didn't work, like it sometimes does with errors like this. You have to sit through the entire, 20 GB+ download all over again.
Scratch my previous post, the problem is back a few days later, maybe tied to an Epic update. I'm trying to ask them to remove the game from my Epic account.
This is still an issue today. I claimed my free copy on Epic Games and am in the process of requesting the removal.
