Need Tech oriented gamer for testing!

Ok, I think I came up with a way to possibly obliterate game lag, or at least am hoping to find a way to make it work with the least amount of difficulty. Firstly I want to limit my game to just maybe 5 saves, and to do this I came up with making game folders (literally complete sims 4 folders including everything, which can simply be plooped in the EA folder to replace existing one), but I need someone tech savvy to help make this happen with as little maintenance as possible. Meaning when updates happen and it's just the game folder you have installed at the time that gets properly updated, is there a way to figure out what can be copy/pasted/replacing into each and every sims 4 game folder without having to literally install all one at a time to update? I mean if this is doable, I am hoping to divide all saves, trays and such into several game folders, all with updated mods which I can simply copy/paste and replace with updated mods each update. I know this sounds a bit confusing to keep up with, but it will solve lag for so many. I have a highend PC unlike many, but still wish to keep saves at a bare minimum because I use a lot of CC besides all the mods I use. So if there is an easy way to accomplish this in the end, then maybe this could be pinned both here and on the forums to help many other's, especially those with older or lowerend PC's. This frees things up to like have a folder strictly for building, another strictly for making sims, another for maybe doing recolors, etc,.... Please help?

Thanks, TnT_Terry

  • @tntterry  The SDX content will only install into the folder Sims 4 is reading at the time.  If you generate a new folder, or swap one for another, the SDX drop will download again.

Most of the other content in the user folder doesn't need to be updated.  That doesn't mean the files won't be affected, only that the effects will happen the first time they're loaded with the new patch in place without your having to do anything special.  As mentioned, gameversion.txt needs to match the current game version in order for the game to NOT disable your mods and cc, but that's it.

If you'd like descriptions of the files in the user folder, please read this article:

  • @tntterry  Other than the Sims Delivery drops, Sims 4 updates don't change anything critical in the user folder.  If you're thinking of the "mods disabled" message, that happens when the gameversion.txt file shows an older version than what is currently running, for example it says 1.97.etc. before you launched the game but the current patch level is 1.98.  Copying over a new version of this file, or editing an older version, would circumvent this problem.

I think though that you'll have better success swapping out the saves folders and leaving everything else intact.  Maybe you want to swap Tray folders too, or even the Mods folders if your various saves use very different mods and custom content.  Regardless, it seems like it might be faster to just move around these subfolders rather than having multiple copies of the Sims 4 user folder and trying to make sure they all have every Tray item and whatever else you want them to share.

Finally, having a lot of saves in the saves folder doesn't add to lag.  Only one save can be loaded at a time; the others just sit there.  The only effect the extra saves might have is making loading to the Main Menu take a little longer, since the game needs to load all those thumbnails and other basic data, but that shouldn't make a noticeable difference unless you have lots of saves and a low-end computer.

@puzzlezaddict ok I understand about the folders, and yes there might be different mods/cc in each most likely, but the saves and tray folders are my biggest reason for this to work. So how would the SDD's work in each folder being those folders aren't loaded when the drops or free items are delivered or in updates? I just know that I need to manually update each folder with mod updates, so was trying to figure out how game updates would effect the folders not loaded?

@puzzlezaddict Thank you so much for explaining this, now off to begin the process. Though maybe this could help many others who have lowend PC's especially. Have a great day! 😉
