New saves crash game on startup

Hello,

I purchased the Tiny Living and Laundry Day stuff packs this morning and launched the Sims 4.  The first time I tried to make a new save, the game crashed.  It now allows me to create new saves, but when I close and launch the game, it crashes during the plumbob screen.  I have confirmed that if I remove the new save game, the game loads without issue.  I have also confirmed that the problem is new saves by repeating this process twice. I tried this after emptying my Mods folder.

I have attached my DxDiag along with the lastCrash and lastException.

I have *not* tried saving an older save as I am scared that it will corrupt it and I will lose that save, but I can back them up and try it if it would be helpful.

Thanks!

Solved it!  Turns out a good old-fashioned "Repair game" from within Origin did the trick 🙂

  • @umbranator  Do you have OneDrive set to automatically sync data from Documents with cloud storage?  If so, please disable it and test.

If that's not the issue, please move the entire Electronic Arts folder out of Documents and onto your desktop.  Launch the game, create a new save, save your progress, quit, relaunch, and see whether it crashes.  Let me know either way.

Thank you for the suggestion!  I don't have OneDrive enabled.

I tried the steps you listed: moving the entire Electronic Arts folder out of Documents, then creating a new save and relaunching.  Same issue!

I did notice now that I'm not getting new instances of lastCrash or lastException.

@umbranator  Try disabling your antivirus/firewall temporarily, just to test.  This could be a permissions issue.  Please also trash the new Electronic Arts folder in Documents (not the one with your saves, the new one that was just created) to reset the permissions.  If this is an antivirus issue, you can set exceptions for Origin.exe and TS4_x64.exe.

It's worth looking into your Controlled Folder Access settings as well.  Normally there's a specific error associated with this kind of block, but it's easy enough to set exceptions for  the game and Origin:
