"Objects" setting texture changes

Since the last update (Aug 19) I've been having issues with the in-game textures. I've always had the "objects" setting on medium and never had a problem with textures looking jagged or grainy. This update made some changes to performance issues and promised improvements,

Enhanced rendering performance for smoother visuals.

but now I have to have the setting on High to get my game to look the same as before..with that comes increased gpu temps so I'm not sure how thats an improvement..is anyone else with a less than top end graphics card experiencing this? I tried going back to dx9 and that fixes the texture issue, but brings with it a line/tear when zooming in and out thats annoying to try an ignore

  • ukbucket  I haven't seen another report of this, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening.  It would be helpful to see a couple of screenshots from your game, and a dxdiag as well.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

puzzlezaddict Thanks for the reply! I've attached my dxdiag and a couple of screenshots, you might have to zoom in a little to see the differences, its much more noticeable in my game.

So please do a clean uninstall and reinstall, as described here:

I will say though that there's no reason your computer can't run the game on ultra graphics settings.  If the GPU is a bit hotter, that's not necessarily a bad thing.  If it's actually overheating, say, if it gets to 80º, then that's different.  But in that case, I'd suggest checking the GPU's fans and the case fans as well, since Sims 4 shouldn't be able to push this graphics card all that hard.

puzzlezaddict Is it really? I'll get on to a reinstall in a sec so thanks for the heads up! I have played the game on ultra in the past but I find my card does get a touch hot, it needs an upgrade at some point. I cleaned it no too long back and try and keep on top of that too. I also have all the packs so I guess I'm wary of playing on too high settings for prolonged sessions

puzzlezaddict I did the fresh uninstall/reinstall of my graphics driver, been playing around with it a few days. I had a driver crash/time out after closing the EA app and I remembered that I've had that a couple times in the past, and could coincide with when I've had my graphics settings higher. So for now I've gone back to dx9 and the textures look infinitely better even on 'medium'. I've attached another dxdiag just to see if the reinstall made any difference so would be grateful if you would take a look, and thanks for your help :)

  • ukbucket  It looks like you have two new graphics driver errors since your last dxdiag, which is fine if they've stopped since you switched to DX9 mode.  I do think you should be able to play on DX11 mode and on ultra settings, but if you're satisfied, that's what matters.

Is it possible that your GPU is overheating with the higher workload?  If you're curious, the Task Manager's Performance section can give you a rough idea of how hot it's running.  A modern graphics card will start to throttle above about 70º C, but anything under 80º is still fine.

If this is the issue, it may also help to manually limit your in-game framerates.  Your monitor is running at 59 Hz, therefore it's not going to show any extra frames above that.  You could therefore limit fps to 59 without impacting performance on a practical level and while also giving your GPU a lower workload.

There are a few ways to do this, but the easiest one is to open Options.ini, in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4, search for framerate limit , and set it to the limit you want to use.  It's fine to play with this number a bit if you're getting graphical glitches at a certain value.  And you can also change this limit even if your GPU isn't overheating—it's a useful test given the other issues you've reported.

puzzlezaddict I do already have the fps limited to 60 in the AMD Adrenaline software, set to a min of 40. I'm not sure why I get the errors as everything is up to date..so that might have to remain a mystery lol. The card isn't exactly overheating, it just runs hotter now that I have to have the settings higher than before to get the game to look the same, I think thats the frustrating part but I'm going to play around and test some more to see how it goes longer term. If I get more errors etc I know I can always play on dx9 without too many issues, which is more than some right now so now I'll take it! Thanks again for your help :)
