Yes, this is a bug that can happen if you travel/switch households/leave the game etc while your pet is running away.

The workaround fix right now is to have them run away again and then not leaving the game until they come back.

Oh thank you! But now my problem is getting my pet ran away again. Funny enough my pet still leaves even when I take care of it quite well. Do I just ignore it?

If it has the Adventurous trait then it will be more likely to run away.

It happens. If you post about it on the PC it will return sooner.

A couch potato will be less likely to run away.

My pet is not adventurous but thank god in this situation it's not a couch potato. Thanks for the tip!
