Nevermind I just found that the load saved game and new game buttons are not IN the game but right after the splash screen at the top right.

The simple way would be to start a New Save. Go to the top right corner and hit the plus ( + ) symbol. This will take you to CAS where you can either create a new household or choose one from your library. I also have developed a habit of using the dosc icon to Open a Saved game. Then select the Named save ... not the Auto-Save.
