Re: Laptop for Sims 4

@Alyerpal97  Sorry for the delay; I was a bit swamped this afternoon, and I wanted to do a thorough search.

The laptop you found would run the base game either barely (and badly) or not at all.  It also has barely any storage, enough for Windows and the 15 GB base game, but you'd start running out of space very quickly, even with a few small apps.  Additionally, you'd have to convert the S version of Windows 10 to the Home version in order to install anything.  This isn't difficult (and it's free), but it's another step.

For a bit more money, you could get a laptop that should run the base game on low-medium graphics, or medium if you lower the in-game resolution a bit from the laptop's native 1920x1080.  A few stuff packs and maybe a game pack or two wouldn't make much of a difference, although the more demanding packs (e.g. Seasons, Island Living) would be pushing it.  These two have the same hardware and should have almost exactly the same performance:

If you're comfortable buying a refurbished model, this one (two links to the same laptop) has a silghtly stronger processor than the above models, plus its hard drive is much faster.  Sims 4 will play the same on any kind of hard drive, once it's loaded, but almost any app will load more quickly on a solid state drive, and Windows will run much faster too.  The drive is smaller, but it's still more than enough for Sims 4.

All of these laptops have only 4 GB memory, which will slow down performance as you switch between tasks.  But they all support upgrades up to either 16 or 32 GB, depending on which site you ask.  Another 4 GB RAM stick for the empty second slot might cost you £25, although you'd need to make sure it matched the existing one exactly.  While it's not strictly necessary to upgrade the memory, it would be a significant improvement for a low price.

If you have other questions, please feel free to ask.

No worries at all about the delay, I really appreciate you spending some time on this!

This all looks great, and I'm so pleased to see that I can get a laptop under £300 that will do what I want it to. All the information on what specs you need has been confusing me all day.

I will take a good look at these examples and hopefully can get one on its way to me soon. Thanks!

From my quick look though, would I be right in saying laptops with an AMD Ryzen 3 processor will do the job?

    Cheers,

    Alex

@Alyerpal97  Yes, a Ryzen 3 CPU will be okay, although only barely.  An 8th gen or newer Intel i3 would probably be a bit better: the processors are a little stronger, and the graphics chip is about equal to the one in a 2200U or 3200U.  But I didn't see any laptops with a newer i3, and the 7th gen and older CPUs aren't as strong.

If you do want to upgrade the memory at some point, be sure to check whether any other laptops you're considering support it.  Most do (and they all should), but I've seen a few models with soldered RAM that can't be swapped out.
