Edit: This did not work.
_____
I solved this issue by simply going into another
plothousehold, checking to see that the colour had returned to the relationship bars, and then exiting to the main menu WITHOUT saving and going back to my original household.I am using the mosaic removal mod, but this problem persisted even when I removed it and restarted. I've had this game for only 3 days.

Probably just a display glitch then.
Thanks for the feedback
As you can see from my edit above, this problem has persisted.

Hm.
Could you start a new game for testing purposes to see if you have the issue there too.
This is to figure out if it's save game or installation related.
I think that I've isolated it to the lighting under graphics options. If I play the game on general high graphics, but set lighting to low, the relationship bars return upon restart. If I turn lighting back to medium or higher, the relationship bars fade to grey once again. I'm hesitant to say this is the solution, however, and I will give it a couple days to see if it really worked.
I'm playing on a Macbook 2011.

Might be a mac issue. Did you try asking in the mac forum over at the official forum ?
I have now.

@mightygroove Could you try repairing your game through Origin ?
Last night I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game but the problem persisted.
I have set my graphics to low lighting and low draw distance and when I restarted, the colour was back in the relationship bars. This only works sometimes.
I haven't seen this problem before. Do you use any CC or Mods?
