Re: My computer shuts down randomly // Sims 4

Hey there @honeysuffer

Usually sudden shutdowns like these are related to either your computer's power supply not being powerful enough for your setup, or an overheating issue.

To check whether it is a temperature issue, one of the easiest solutions would be to use an Open Hardware Monitor: http://openhardwaremonitor.org/

Turn a game on, such as Minecraft, and have this on the background and keep tap on the temperatures of your computer. If your temperatures clearly go way above 80'C and such, chances are rather high that your issue has to do with high temperatures making your computer shut itself down in order to protect itself.

Easiest solution to that would be to very simply clean up your computer from dust. Turn off the computer, unplug it, and then use a can of compressed air to spray the ventilation outlets, especially the fans. Make sure also that if your computer has any filters protecting the outlets that you clean them from any excess dust. Make sure to also check that your fans are actually spinning properly with the Open Hardware Monitor. They could be clogged with dust.

Is your computer self-assembled, or have you bought yourself a new GPU lately ? If so, make sure your power supply is good enough for your GPU especially as it tends to be the one using most power on your computer setup. Only way to really tell how much power your PU is giving you is by physically examining the PU itself, so I cannot really help you with that. Usually most PU's have a sticker on the side of them in which you should see the maximum load value in Watts.

Since this happens with other games as well, it probably doesn't have to do with video settings, but you may try to reduce your video settings quality in the games you're playing as well. Enabling Vsync for example will lock the frames to 60 which will generally ease the load given to your GPU, which consequently decreases temperatures.

Good luck !

  • Okay thank you @RedFoxxie , I checked the temperature and it went up to at least 90'C so I'll check into cleaning around the computer. Could I use a duster or would it be best to use compressed air?

    Hey there again @honeysuffer

That sounds, indeed, like an overheating issue.

Please, rather use compressed air than something physical such as a feather duster to wipe off any dust from inside the computer. You can of course use a duster or even a cloth to wipe off dust from the surface of a computer, but never, ever, stick anything capable of creating static electricity into your computer. That'd fry the chips inside and that definitely is not good ! There are certain brushes existing which can be used to gently rub dust off chips and the board but if it isn't specifically made for it, don't use it.

This guide gives you a rather good general idea how you can clean up your computer and what sort of steps to take to ensure you clean it up properly: https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-the-Inside-of-a-Computer

If you have a laptop, do not try opening the computer up on your own. You can clean up the fans and the heat shield by blowing compressed air through the vents. Look for the vents both on the side and bottom of the computer to reach everywhere properly. Make sure also that when you're using a laptop, these ventilation holes wouldn't be covered by anything. For example, a common mistake is to use a laptop on ones lap. Despite the name "Laptop" , the modern laptops actually are not very good used on ones lap.

    Good luck !
