Try deleting Origin cache files: http://sims4.crinrict.com/en/2014/09/delete-origin-cache-files/
I was having this problem. It turns out that the sims 4 was trying to run in the background while the game was trying to patch. I closed down all instances of the sims 4 from task manager and the update was able to complete.

I tried this solution, but it did not work for me. I am running windows 7. I did find a work around though - I bought the gave via CD rather than download, and when I click on the autorun or setup from the CD and click continue the game runs.
I have been having this same problem. I have tried every possible solution that I have seen on the forum so far, including uninstalling and reinstalling Origin, restarting the computer, uninstalling Sims 4 (reinstalled from game discs), and running cleaners, but I cannot get the game to update or download Spa Day (I have all the other expansions and packs). This is the pop up window I have been getting: "The download server is not responding." I have reported the issue many times. The latest is under Report ID: 08a492d880022050. Please help! The game will not let me play without this update. I am getting extremely frustrated.
Thank you!
