My suggestion would be to start a brand new save.  In the existing saves I played during the challenge, I had very few wild Growfruit trees.  In a new save started after the last patch, I've got no less than a dozen across the worlds.

As @crinrict says, though, multiple simmers posted rooms with the tree in it to the gallery, if you don't want to leave the save you're playing.
